We were so grateful to be part of BC Wheelchair Sports Association’s Summer MultiSport Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp and bring our Let’s Play program to the youngest participants.

There’s something pretty special about getting to share the sport we love with kiddos; introducing them to wheelchair basketball, giving them a chance to get moving and play, and hopefully creating a few new basketball fans along the way.

A huge thank you to BC Wheelchair Sports for hosting such a fun week and for giving us the opportunity to be part of it. We love getting to see kids try something new, get involved and, most importantly, have fun on the court!🎉

We’re hiring!

BC Wheelchair Basketball Society is looking for a Program Coordinator to join our team and help coordinate and deliver wheelchair basketball programs across BC.

This full-time role will support the BCWBL, Bridging the Gap programs, volunteer management, special events, equipment management, and general administration.

Full-time | 37.5 hours/week
$45,000–$48,000 + benefits
Evenings, weekends, and regional travel required

If you’re passionate about sport, have strong organizational and communication skills, and want to help create more opportunities for people to participate in wheelchair basketball, we’d love to hear from you.

After 18 years with BC Wheelchair Basketball Society, we’re saying a heartfelt thank you to Makiko Harada as she begins her next chapter.

For nearly two decades, Makiko has been an important part of BCWBS and the growth of wheelchair basketball in BC. We’re incredibly grateful for the time, energy, knowledge, and care she has brought to our organization and community over the years.

Reflecting on her time with BCWBS, Makiko shared:

“I am truly grateful for the opportunities I have had to grow both professionally and personally during my 18 years with BCWBS. I sincerely appreciate the trust and support I have received from the organization and its members throughout my time here.”

What a day at Oval Community Day!

A huge thank you to the Richmond Olympic Oval for having us join the fun!

We had such a great time getting on court, introducing kids and families to wheelchair basketball, and seeing so many smiles along the way. It was awesome to watch everyone give it a try, challenge themselves, and have fun with the sport we love.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to play with us, and to all of our awesome athletes that helped make it possible!

Every athlete’s journey is different, but the right support can make all the difference.

Caden and Cameron took very different paths to wheelchair basketball, yet both have found confidence, community, and opportunities to compete at the highest levels through the sport. We were grateful to sit down with them to hear about their journeys, their goals, and what receiving custom sports chairs has meant to them.

A huge thank you to Caden and Cameron for sharing your stories so openly. Your experiences are a reminder of the impact that sport, strong communities, and the right equipment can have on an athlete’s journey.

We’re also incredibly grateful to the BC Rehab Foundation for making these new sport chairs possible. Their support is helping remove barriers so athletes can focus on what matters most: playing the game they love and reaching their full potential.

Save the date! The 2026 BC Wheelchair Basketball Jr. Challenge is coming to Elgin Park Secondary on September 26–27.

Whether you’re brand new to wheelchair basketball or already competing, this weekend is all about building skills, making connections, and having fun. Athletes ages 10–25 of all abilities are welcome, and sport wheelchairs will be available for anyone who needs one.

What to expect:
• Two days of on-court training with experienced coaches
• Lunch included both days
• A pinnie or T-shirt
• Team dinner on Saturday evening
• Parent information session on Sunday covering athlete pathways, BC Games, Jr. League, advocacy, local clubs, and more

Interested in joining the BC Wheelchair Basketball Jr. League or learning more about the sport? This is the perfect place to start.

Registration details:
• September 26–27
• Elgin Park Secondary
• $75 (includes lunch both days + pinnie or T-shirt)
• Participants must be BC Wheelchair Basketball Society members

Have a future baller under 10? Join us for our FREE Let’s Play session on Saturday from 1:30–3:30 p.m. BCWBS members can participate at no cost. Sport wheelchairs will be provided, and a pinnie or T-shirt can be purchased separately (approximately $25).

What happens when you mix basketball, camping, river swims, pizza, ice cream, and a drive-in movie? You get one unforgettable summer camp.

The inaugural Junior BC Wheelchair Basketball Summer Camp brought young wheelchair basketball athletes together in Enderby for three days of skill development, teamwork, and plenty of fun beyond the court.

Hosted by BC Wheelchair Basketball Society and Okanagan Jr Thunder Wheelchair Basketball Club athletes trained with Coach Marni and Coach Ryan at AL Fortune Secondary School—a pretty special location for Coach Marni, who graduated from the school in 1983 and is now proudly featured on its Hall of Fame wall (talk about a full-circle moment).

When the basketball wrapped up each day, the memories kept coming with time at the river, the Enderby outdoor pool, pizza, ice cream, and a night at the Starlight Drive-In. Families camped together at Riverside RV Park, making the experience about so much more than basketball.

A huge thank you to the Enderby Lions, Sutherlands Bakery, A.L. Fortune Secondary and the Starlight Drive-In for helping make this inaugural camp such a success.

This may have been the first Junior Summer Camp, but we hope it won’t be the last. We’re excited to grow this into an annual event and one day welcome athletes from across BC.

The impact of wheelchair basketball reaches far beyond the court. ❤️🏀

Amanda’s journey began with a “Have a Go” day during her rehab following a spinal cord injury. That first introduction to the sport led to lifelong friendships, representing Canada, competing at the Paralympic Games, and, most importantly, finding a community that transformed her life.

Stories like Amanda’s remind us that wheelchair basketball is about so much more than sport — it’s about belonging, confidence, and creating opportunities that can change lives.
