National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day
As the British Columbia College of Social Workers joins people across Canada in observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who did not return home, and hold in our thoughts the families and communities who continue to live with the profound and lasting impacts of residential schools, colonialism and systemic discrimination.
September 30 is a solemn reminder of the painful history and lasting impacts of residential schools. It is also an opportunity to reflect with humility on what we have learned, what we continue to learn, and the responsibilities we carry today. Truth and reconciliation extend beyond one day and call for continued learning, reflection and meaningful action.
As the regulator of social work in British Columbia, the College recognizes its responsibility to acknowledge the role that social work and social service systems have played in contributing to and perpetuating harm, and to continue examining how that history and its impacts are reflected in our work today. This includes continuing to learn, bringing Indigenous perspectives into our work, and building meaningful relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities.
We are deeply grateful for the leadership, knowledge and guidance of the BCCSW Indigenous Council, and for the generosity of the Elders who share their wisdom, teachings and experiences with our staff. We invite registrants to reflect on their own responsibilities as social workers, including what cultural safety, cultural humility and addressing anti-Indigenous racism mean in everyday practice and relationships.
We invite registrants and members of our communities to take time on September 30 to pause, listen and learn, and to participate in local events and gatherings that honour Survivors and remember the children who did not return home. May this day create space for remembrance, reflection and continued commitment to the work of truth and reconciliation.
