When children were invited to explore what deeper connection to Land could mean, they decided their Gathering Tree needed a knitted sweater for winter—so they made one.
Children understand something adults often forget: care is mutual. We care for the Land, and the Land cares for us.
This reciprocity is at the heart of our Land Justice work and shapes how neighbourhood houses approach climate action—not only responding to climate impacts, but reducing harm and building stronger relationships with the Land. Learn more about Land Justice through the link in our bio.
We see climate impacts every day: extreme heat in homes without cooling, wildfire smoke keeping children indoors, and severe weather leaving isolated neighbours vulnerable. When that happens, people turn to the places and relationships they already trust.
Neighbourhood houses work alongside residents, volunteers, Indigenous partners and local organizations to strengthen climate resilience through emergency preparedness, cooling supports, wellness checks, food resilience and neighbour-to-neighbour connection.
The City’s Climate Emergency Action Plan and Climate Change Adaptation Strategy recognize that climate action requires collaboration across governments, organizations and communities. Investment in community partnerships and neighbourhood-based initiatives is essential.
As Vancouver prepares for the 2026 municipal election, we’re asking: How can we work together not only to respond to climate emergencies, but build proactive, long-term solutions rooted in reciprocity and relationship with the Land?
