It's Science Literacy Week and National Family Week, a good time to wonder out loud together.

Why does bread rise? Where do the birds go in winter? Pick a question, find a library book or video, and learn the answer as a family. Reading science together builds vocabulary and curiosity at the same time.

In Vancouver? Science World's big dome on False Creek is a fun place to explore those questions together. Check scienceworld.ca for hours and tickets.

This year's Cyber Security Awareness Month theme is "Your best defence is you."
Week 1 is about spotting scams. Watch for messages that:
• Rush you ("act now!")
• Ask for passwords or codes
• Have a link you didn't expect
• Come from someone you don't know
When in doubt, don't click. Call the company using a number you already trust.

All four come back to the same idea: everyone deserves information they can understand and use.
This month we'll share tips, stories and free resources for learners, families and the people who support them. Follow along.

Happy World Teachers' Day!

Today we thank the teachers, tutors, instructors and volunteers who help people of every age read, write and learn.

In community programs across BC, a teacher might be a retired nurse tutoring on Tuesday nights or a coordinator setting up a family literacy circle at the library.

Tag a teacher who made a difference for you.

BC's local elections are on Saturday, October 17.

Our new blog explains why literacy and voting go hand in hand. It also lists free resources, including a voter's guide in several languages.

You'll be voting for your mayor, council, school trustees and more. These are the people who make decisions about libraries, parks, transit and schools.

Voting also takes reading: finding where to vote, knowing what ID to bring, and understanding what candidates stand for.

Elections are on October 17th. Find resources to help students learn about local elections in BC.
