What began 25 years ago with the dedication of a single music therapist has grown into a vital program supporting children and families across BC Children’s Hospital.

Founder Erin Delnea reflects on the early days of introducing music therapy into pediatric care, and the evolution into a team of seven therapists working across diverse areas of the hospital. The team’s vision continues to guide the program’s development as they respond to the complex and changing needs their patients.

Music therapy remains an essential part of interdisciplinary care—meeting children where they are, when they need it most.

For 25 years, music therapy has been an integral part of care at BC Children’s Hospital.

Through moments of uncertainty, pain, and healing, music therapists have supported children and their families in finding comfort, expression, and connection through their hospital journey. From bedside lullabies to shared musical experiences, their work continues to shape meaningful moments for patients and families.

We recognize dedication of the BC Children’s Hospital music therapy team whose work brings compassion and creativity into clinical care every day.

And the music continues.

Thank you to your support of families seeking Music Therapy in British Columbia!

“I see improvements in communication, focus, and emotional regulation. Music has become a tool for connection and learning that works in ways other therapies don’t,” Riccardo’s mom Christina shares.
We’re so happy to hear how Riccardo is doing and celebrate his growth during Music Therapy Awareness Month! 🎶

Music therapy helps kids build attention and focus, reduce hyperactivity, and strengthen social and communication skills. Because music is structured and predictable, it supports planning, turn-taking, listening, and responding to cues — all while being fun and engaging.
Riccardo’s favourite instrument at therapy are the rainbow bells (pictured) and these days, you’re likely to find him chiming the tune of “Ordinary” by Alex Warren. 🙌

March is Music Therapy Awareness Month! 🎶

Across British Columbia and around the world, music therapists support children and families through some of life’s most vulnerable moments. From the NICU to pediatric care and beyond, music therapy uses instruments, voice, and compassionate connection to help young patients feel calmer, supported, and heard—one song at a time.

We’re grateful to Children’s Hospital Colorado for beautifully showcasing the work of music therapists in pediatric care in this video. Thank you for helping share the impact of music therapy with families and communities everywhere.

💬 We’d love to hear from you:
Have you or someone you know experienced music therapy? Or is there a song that has helped you or your child through a difficult moment?

It is with deep sadness that we honour the passing of David Barnett, founder and CEO of Music Heals, whose belief in the healing power of music helped change so many lives across British Columbia.

Through his vision, Music Heals funded and expanded access to music therapy programs across many populations — in hospitals, long term care, community services, schools, and more — bringing comfort, connection, and joy where it was needed most.

Music therapist Susan Summers, who served on the board when David first founded Music Heals, remembers “his tenacity, vision, generosity, and unwavering belief that music could heal.” His commitment lifted up clinicians, clients, families, and entire communities.

We are incredibly grateful for David’s support of music therapy and the legacy he created — a legacy of compassion, creativity, and care that will continue through the many programs and lives he helped nurture.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable spirit. 💙 🎶
