Founded in 1986, the BC Alliance for Arts + Culture represents over 400 member organizations from across the artistic disciplines in British Columbia. The Alliance is BC's leading arts information aggregator and a resource to the arts, culture and heritage community. We advocate for our sector by monitoring public policy, synthesizing issues for our members, supporting and developing research, pro

viding services and professional development, and representing the interests of artists and cultural workers. Our members have access to a comprehensive package of benefits including group health, RRSP, general liability and directors and officers' insurance, and human resources services. Members receive discounts on a range of products and services through our Members' Advantage Program. We also offer a range of services that allow members to publicize and plan their events, gather and network, and access training and skills development opportunities.

🐦 Encounters with ghosts. Diasporic memories. Dreams. Grandmothers.

🐦 birdcage is an introspective multi-media performance that reflects on family, migration, and memory through written text, lanterns, voice, soundscape, and improvisation. These elements weave together images in a devised form of cross-disciplinary storytelling.

🐦 The original work is composed and performed by Alex Mah and collaborator-violinist Ilana Waniuk, with an artistic team made up of first- or second-generation Canadians.

🐦 birdcage explores the hope, longing, and confusion of Mah’s mixed-race, immigrant identity in search of itself by lantern light.

🎨 Artists Somayeh Fanaei, Alejandra Morales Garza, and Seoul Kim recontextualize traditional motifs, imagery, and conventions from their respective cultures and countries of origin to explore themes of identity and perception while creating connections in their communities and wider world.

🎨 Somayeh Fanaei renders beautiful portraits and still lifes in pastel, using the colours and patterns of traditional Persian carpets as a recurring theme.

🎨 Alejandra Morales Garza depicts colourful fruits and fabrics common in Mexico in vibrant and energetic acrylic and oil paintings.

🎨 Seoul Kim embraces the Korean folk art form of Minhwa, capturing florals in bright colours and elegant lines.

🎨 Presented by West Vancouver Community Arts Council.

✨ From Westminster Abbey to Vancouver

🎵 Danish organ virtuoso Tina Christiansen comes to St James’ Anglican Church on Saturday, September 19 at 7:30 pm, bringing the grandeur and virtuosity of Europe’s great organ tradition to Vancouver.

🎵 Tina has performed at some of the world’s most distinguished organs, including St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey in London, as well as Riga Dom, Kaliningrad Cathedral, and St Florian Stiftsbasilika in Austria.

🎵 Her performance at St James features masterpieces by JS Bach, César Franck, Herbert Howells, and Louis Vierne, alongside contemporary works by Danish composers. The programme also includes David Loxley-Blount’s Eventide Étude, dedicated to Tina and premiered by her at Westminster Abbey in 2023.

🎵 Experience an evening of extraordinary music, colour, and virtuosity at St James’.
