Society for Travelers Respecting Animal Welfare - STRAW

Society for Travelers Respecting Animal Welfare - STRAW If start-up funding is found, STRAW will be a non-profit society recommending tourism animal attractions that provide a high level of animal care.

STRAW hopes to be the first non-profit society to promote animal-related tourism attractions that provide a high level of animal care. STRAW's website would give information about zoos, aquariums, petting farms, animal safaris and any facility with animals that is open to the public. Each attraction listing would include:

• the facility's name, address, phone, email
• website address (with a link

to their website if they rated 3.5 or more out of 5 stars)
• if they have Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariams (CAZA) accreditation
• if they have any other association accreditation
• if they have been approved by Zoo Check
• if there was any legal action involving sub-standard animal care
• if there was any negative media reports based on animal care
• a star rating from the society based on a personal visit and/or information from the above groups
• an average star rating from reviews submitted to STRAW's website by members of the public who have recently visited the facility. (Credibility would need to be maximized by random verification call-backs or charging a nominal fee, around $3, for each review.) In the short term the website would cover just Canadian animal-based attractions, but in the long term STRAW would rate and recommend animal-related tourist attractions all over the world.

Our Story

STRAW hopes to be the first non-profit society to promote animal-related tourism attractions that provide a high level of animal welfare. The welfare level would be rated based on detailed investigations. STRAW's website would give information about sanctuaries, zoos, aquariums, petting farms, animal safaris and any facility with animals that is open to the public. Each attraction listing would include: • the facility's name, address, phone, email • website address (with a link to their website if they rated 3.5 or more out of 5 stars) • if they have accreditation with a professional zoological association • if they have been approved by Zoocheck • if there was any legal action or media reports involving sub-standard animal care • a star rating based on STRAW’s investigation including a site visit where possible. In the short term, STRAW would concentrate on animal facilities in Asia, as this region suffers from low average animal welfare standards. The long term goal is to rate and recommend animal-related tourist attractions all over the world.
