📣 We’re thrilled to announce Jim Balakshin as the new Executive Director of Gordon Neighbourhood House (GNH), effective June 1st! 📣

Many across the Neighbourhood House Movement already know Jim through his longstanding leadership at GNH and across ANHBC. Over the years, he has consistently brought steadiness, care, and deep commitment to community in every role he has held. Most recently, Jim has been serving as Interim Associate Executive Director, helping guide the house through an important period of transition with his humility, calmness and relationship-building.

We also want to honour and thank Thanh Lam for her leadership over the past year. Thanh stepped into the ED role and led with heart and commitment to GNH, the West End community and ANHBC. Thanh has truly loved getting to know the GNH Staff Team and Community and while she needs to focus more time on her family, Thanh will continue working alongside Jim as a source of support and continuity through to the end of the year.

Please join us in warmly congratulating Jim and thanking Thanh. Gordon NH will continue to thrive through the leadership that both of them bring to this community. ❤️

We’re thrilled to celebrate the completion of our third "Around the Table" cohort!

Over four weeks newcomers came together through the Language Enhanced Employment Program (LEEP) to build connections, strengthen their English language skills, and develop resume-building and interview skills to support their job search in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Representing Iran, Ukraine, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, and Morocco, participants brought unique perspectives, experiences, and cultures to every conversation, making this cohort especially vibrant and enriching.

To mark the end of the program, we gathered for a potluck and certificate celebration. Participants shared homemade dishes from their cultures, reflected on their journeys, and celebrated the friendships, learning, and accomplishments achieved along the way.

This program was made possible through our collaboration with Little Mountain Neighbourhood House and St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church. We are grateful to everyone who helped make this program such a success and look forward to continuing to support newcomers, foster meaningful connections, and strengthen our community.

There’s something special about the May Long weekend in the West End — longer days, busy patios, the return of the farmers' market, sunsets (and whale sightings!) at English Bay, and time to slow down.

Neighbourhood houses are grounded in the idea that everyone belongs and that strong communities are built through care, connection, and shared responsibility. As we enjoy the weekend, we also recognize the history behind Victoria Day and reflect on our shared responsibility to continue learning, listening, and supporting reconciliation on the unceded homelands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

This weekend, we hope neighbours find time to rest, gather with neighbours, support amazing local businesses, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, and reflect on the kind of community we want to continue building together.

Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and restorative long weekend.
