This month, as we honour Indigenous histories and contributions, we’re also thinking about Indigenous community members who live with disabilities and face added barriers to accessibility and independence. The Kinsmen Foundation’s work on assistive technology and home accessibility supports this broader vision of inclusion across all communities in BC!

May 21 is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, and we’re joining in.

The web should work for everyone, regardless of ability, device, or context. Making things accessible isn’t a “nice to have” – it’s the foundation of good design and good communication. A clearer heading, a well-written alt text, a video with captions, a form that works with a keyboard… small choices like these can open the door for someone who’s usually left out.

If you’re curious where to start or want to go a bit deeper, have a look at what’s happening around the world at accessibility.day (https://accessibility.day).

In April, we mark Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month.

Across BC people, family, friends, neighbours living with limb loss or limb difference. Many are busy working, parenting, studying, and doing all the everyday things – but they still hit barriers with access, mobility, and inclusion.

At the Kinsmen Foundation of BC, we help people with physical disabilities get the equipment and support they need to stay mobile, independent, and involved in their communities.

Some legacies don’t fade—they grow. 💙

For over 30 years, Simon Cox dedicated his time, heart, and vision to the Kinsmen Foundation of BC. He believed in something simple, yet powerful:

👉 Listen first.
👉 Innovate with purpose.
👉 And always put independence at the centre.

Simon didn’t just support people with disabilities—he championed their ability to live fully, independently, and with dignity. And that belief continues to shape everything we do today.

✨ In just TWO WEEKS, we’ll see his legacy in action.

The Simon Cox Student Design Competition brings BC post secondary students together to design and build innovative technology that helps adults with disabilities live more independently. It’s creativity, compassion, and problem-solving—all driven by the same philosophy Simon lived by.

And here’s the beautiful part…

✨ From Serving the Foundation… to Winning Big! ✨
Last year’s Kinsmen Foundation 50/50 raffle winner, Marnie, is someone who truly embodies what Kin is all about 💙
From serving as District Secretary (back in the days when a secretary mailed everything 📬!) to serving the Kinsmen Foundation as a board member — Marnie Nicholson was part of the Foundation during its crucial years, when it was still finding its footing.
It’s dedicated volunteers like her who helped keep it moving forward, strengthening it and shaping it into the independent, impactful organization it is today elevating the independence of adults with disabilities living at the poverty line. 💫
She’s also spent years giving back in so many ways — from helping at fundraisers to being part of a club that built accessibility ramps for those in need and administrating a Kin community daycare.
And last year… it was her turn to receive. 🎉
Her story is such a powerful reminder: the good you put into the world has a way of coming back around.
💙 Every ticket purchased supports the incredible work of the Kinsmen Foundation — and keeps stories like Marnie’s going.
🎟️ Get your tickets today… you might be next!

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and a good reminder of the skills, creativity, and contributions people with developmental and other disabilities bring to our communities. The Kinsmen Foundation of BC is here on the practical side of that story, helping adults with physical disabilities across the province access the equipment and accessibility upgrades they need to live with more independence and dignity.

This month, we’d love you to take a moment to think about what inclusion and accessibility look like in your own community, and how we can all show up for neighbours living with disabilities here in BC.

This Giving Tuesday, help the Kinsmen Foundation of BC go the extra mile for disabled people across British Columbia. All year long, the Foundation funds equipment that turns everyday barriers into everyday possibilities – from wheelchairs and lifts to ramps, custom orthotics, and other adaptive devices that support independence.
Giving Tuesday is our chance to do even more. If you are able, please make a special gift today so we can say “yes” to more requests for life-changing equipment and support.
