Advanced voting is here, and a lot is competing for attention this election.

If you've walked down Main Street toward Prior, you've passed beneath the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts. They went up in the early 1970s, cutting straight through Hogan's Alley, what was then the heart of Vancouver's Black community. The freeway they were meant to feed into was never built, because people in Chinatown and Strathcona organized and refused to let their neighbourhoods be torn down further, but the viaducts stayed anyway.

Council voted to remove them in 2015, and a plan for the area followed in 2018. Since then, people from Hogan's Alley, Chinatown, the Downtown Eastside, and False Creek have kept showing up, at open houses, at council meetings, and through countless long evenings spent working out what this place could become. What they've built together is a real, workable vision.

What it needs now is follow-through. HxBIA has joined this coalition in asking everyone running for Mayor and Council to commit to three things:

⭐️ Prioritize and fund removal of the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts.
⭐️ Use the City's planning tools to keep housing, public space, and community benefits moving.
⭐️ Create a Northeast False Creek Task Force with real community representation and regular public reporting.

After 13 years, Binners' Project returns to Victory Square on Thursday, October 15 for one last Coffee Cup Revolution, where binners can bring in collected used coffee cups and redeem them for 10 cents each.⁠

The event was spearheaded by the late Ken Lyotier in 2014, building on his work in the early 1990s that helped expand BC's Bottle Bill to include many non-alcoholic beverage containers now part of the refund system. Last year alone, binners collected 213,841 coffee cups, generating $21,384.10 in refunds directly for binners. Over 13 years, that work has added up to more than one million cups diverted.⁠

Hastings Crossing sits on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Indigenous peoples have called this land home since time immemorial, and they remain deeply connected to this neighbourhood today.

Established as a direct response to the TRC’s Call to Action #80, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a reminder of the history and legacy of Canada’s residential schools, and to honour Survivors, their families, and those who never returned home.

Education is an important first step, and we encourage our community to continue learning about the lasting impacts of residential schools, uplift Indigenous voices, and support Indigenous-led organizations doing important work towards reconciliation.

Carnegie Housing Project is hosting a community event with cultural performances, cultural sharing, and opportunities to connect with the community TODAY at the Balmoral Program Space. All are welcome! ⁠

Aboriginal Front Door Society – a community shelter providing personal storage and hot meals for members in need.

BC Indigenous Housing – a non-profit advocating for safe, attainable housing for Indigenous individuals & families.

PHS Community Services Society – a non-profit providing supportive housing and harm reduction who, alongside Indigenous harm reduction leaders, launched Culture Saves Lives, a movement addressing the social determinants of health through cultural connection and care.

Olivier Salvas asks that question throughout THE 90s, a contemporary abstract exhibition inspired by the nostalgia, colour, and energy of the decade. The work isn't a literal recreation of the 90s, it's an exploration of what we remember about it: the feeling of individuality and self-expression without the pressure to constantly adapt and conform to new trends. The freedom to simply be ourselves.⁠

And just like that, it seems fall has come right on schedule. ☔️ Due to the forecasted rain this week, we've made the decision to cancel our final Friday Lunch Meet this Friday.
