Pets and Friends

Pets and Friends Bringing Joy Through Pet Therapy! To find out how to get involved, visit www.petsandfriends.org!

Since 1982, our volunteers and their pets have provided free pet therapy visitations to patients, seniors, students, and veterans across the Lower Mainland, uplifting spirits and fostering connections. Founded in 1982, the mission of Pets and Friends is to provide and promote the benefits of pet therapy to seniors, students, and individuals living with a disability in health and educational settings. We also work with mental health clubs at high schools, colleges and universities to organize 'dog therapy days' and help students take a 'paws' from their studies. Pets and Friends screens handlers, evaluates pets, and places the teams in the community to provide the many social, emotional and physical benefits of pet therapy.

💜 Remembering Toshi 🐾

Pets and Friends is saddened to hear of the sudden passing of therapy dog Toshi.

Toshi loved visiting the students and staff at her elementary school, and she also brought her friendly nature and joyful spirit to high school students. She had a special way of making people of all ages feel welcome and seen.

We’re grateful for all the time Toshi and her pet parent, Christine, shared with our pet therapy program. Their visits, kindness and dedication made a difference to many community members.

Toshi will be deeply missed by her family, the students and staff who knew her, and the wider Pets and Friends community. We feel very fortunate to have known her and to have been part of her journey.

Thank you, Toshi and Christine, for everything you gave to Pets and Friends.

✨ Tail Wagging Tuesday! ✨

Let’s give it up for Luana & Bodhi and Linda & Milo who are taking on a new opportunity within the emergency response community, bringing their calm presence, companionship and plenty of tail wags to dedicated call-takers and dispatch staff.

A special shout-out to Farzad & Jasper, a long-standing pet therapy team, for helping with their orientation and training. We’re so grateful for the time and energy they’ve put into helping these teams get started — and for all they continue to give as volunteers at this site.

And Jasper isn’t the only familiar face! Jasper & Kona (along with Kona’s owner, Cathie) have been volunteering here on alternating Fridays with Richard & Spot and Lorraine & Mika, sharing a little comfort between the calls and some much-needed distraction during busy shifts.

It’s wonderful to see our pet therapy teams supporting one another and bringing their special kind of support to the emergency response community.

Schools are back - and Skye and her mom Deanne are over the moon their visits are too! Not only do they love seeing all the students, this week they shared a special calm moment with a student that really touched our hearts.

We talk a lot about the excitement and joy our pets bring to people, but honestly, some of the best moments are the calm quiet ones that everyone walks away from with lighter hearts.

Thank you for sharing with us 𝙎𝙠𝙮𝙚 🐾 💜
