MIHCan

MIHCan The birth of a child should be one of the happiest times in a family's life. But for too many families in India, the joy of welcoming a new baby is cut short.

Health Together is comprised of doctors, researchers and others from Canada, India and around the world working to improve maternal and infant well-being and reduce maternal and infant mortality in India With more than 3.5 million babies born prematurely each year, India has one of the world's highest maternal and infant mortality rates. UBC is committed to tackling the most dire health problems f

acing women and children around the world. Dr. Farah Shroff established MIH to do exactly that, by reducing infant deaths from preventable causes in Odisha, a state with one of India's highest rates of maternal and infant death. The MIH Can team includes collaborators from UBC and across Canada and India, with expertise in global maternal-infant health research, clinical care, and community development. MIH Can is working with communities to implement several evidence-based strategies for improving maternal and infant well-being. Together, over five years, these interventions will prevent the deaths of 5,232 children in Odisha and help thousands more children get a healthy start at life. UBC would be pleased to work with donors to define tailored opportunities for recognition.

Systems change doesn’t happen overnight, it requires deep roots to bear meaningful fruit. 🌳✨

This illustration beautifully captures what a healthy, equitable ecosystem looks like when we prioritize the foundational values that sustain community well-being. When we ground our initiatives in Equity, Inclusivity, Community, Respect, Collaboration, Sustainability, and Empowerment, the outcomes speak for themselves:

🍎 Culturally inclusive systems
🍎 Evidence-based & affordable innovations
🍎 Disease prevention & reduced mortality
🍎 Sustainable environments
🍎 Healthy women and children

True impact requires us to nurture the roots together. How is your organization pouring into its foundational values this week?

May 16 is International Celiac Disease Awareness Day, a time to raise awareness about an autoimmune disease that affects millions worldwide, many of whom remain undiagnosed. Celiac disease is often misunderstood as simply a dietary restriction, but for those living with it, it impacts daily life, long-term health, and even one’s sense of belonging.

Today is International Day of the Midwife. A moment to recognize the people who stand at the very beginning of life, often in its most vulnerable moments.

Midwives do far more than deliver babies. They provide essential care before, during, and after birth, advocate for maternal health, and build trust within communities. In many parts of the world, access to a trained midwife can mean the difference between life and death for both parent and child.

Investing in midwifery is one of the most effective ways to improve global health outcomes, reducing maternal and newborn mortality, expanding access to care, and strengthening health systems from the ground up.

Today, we acknowledge their consistent impact.

We are not meant to do life alone.

Connection isn’t just a feeling, it’s a foundation of health.
When we build community, we support wellbeing, belonging, and resilience.

As highlighted in Dr. Farah Shroff’s research, connection can be intentionally created and is essential for both individual and collective health (Shroff & Mehta, 2023; Shroff & Helaire, 2024).

Because in the end:
we are not separate, we are one.

Our founder, Dr. Shroff, visited the Philippines earlier this year and met with Dr. Delen, who embodies the steadfast dedication and compassion of Filipino healthcare workers. 🇵🇭🏥🌟

Filipino healthcare workers, particularly nurses, have long played a vital role in hospitals worldwide, only recently gaining representation in hit TV shows like HBO Max’s The Pitt. In reality, they are often overworked and underpaid, and many Filipinos back home still lack access to medical care.
