Today is Clean Air Day—a reminder that clean air is essential for healthy lungs. 💙💚

For Carter Vigh, poor air quality had devastating consequences. At just nine years old, Carter died from an asthma attack made worse by air pollution. His story inspired Carters Project, a BC Lung initiative bringing real-time air quality monitoring to communities across British Columbia.

Thanks to supporters, thousands of British Columbians now have access to local air quality information that can help them make informed decisions and protect their health.

This Clean Air Day, let's recognize that clean air isn't a luxury—it's a necessity. Together, we can continue expanding access to air quality monitoring and help create healthier, safer communities for everyone.

Today is ***coDay 🚭

To***co and ni****ne companies deliberately design their products to hook you. Sugars, flavours, and cooling agents all mask the harshness of ni****ne so you inhale more, and get addicted faster.
9 in 10 people who smoke begin in adolescence. While BC’s smoking rates have fallen over the past several decades, youth va**ng rates in Canada are some of the highest in the world.

That is why a Smoke-Free Generation policy to protect current and future generations from the harms of smoking and va**ng is so important. The Smoke-Free Generation policy proposes a progressive increase in the legal, minimum age to purchase to***co and ni****ne products, including va**ng devices. Those born on or after a specific date will never be able to purchase these products, effectively phasing out the sale and use of to***co and ni****ne products in BC.

This World No To***co Day, let's protect children from the harms of to***co and ni****ne. Learn more at bclung.ca/smokefreegeneration

Amazing day yesterday bringing Carters Project to Kelowna as BC Lung collaborated with the City of Kelowna on Climate Resiliency Workshops to provide DIY air cleaners and emergency preparedness kits to local residents. 💙

This sold out workshop was a great opportunity for folks to learn more about indoor air and how to keep their lungs safe during times of poor air quality. Thank you to everyone who attended and to Madison Poultney, City of Kelowna , and the Youth Climate Corps for organizing and all of your support!

BC Lung will be back in Kelowna for 2 workshops on June 9th! ☀

As Asthma Awareness Month comes to a close, the conversation doesn’t stop here. 💙

Asthma can affect people of all ages, but with the right tools and support, it can be managed confidently. One of the most important tools is an asthma action plan — a simple guide that helps you recognize symptoms, manage flare-ups, and know when to get medical help.

If you or your child has asthma, now is a great time to review or create an asthma action plan with your healthcare provider. Check out the links below for helpful resources and information.

Wildfire smoke is becoming a growing part of summer in BC — and for people living with asthma, it can quickly turn dangerous. Smoke can irritate the lungs, trigger asthma symptoms, and make it harder to breathe, even when the fire is far away. 💙🔥

If you or your child has asthma:
• Check local air quality alerts
• Keep rescue inhalers nearby
• Limit outdoor activity during smoky days
• Keep windows closed and use clean indoor air when possible

Last week, BC Lung along with Carter's mom, Amber, and brother, Dax visited Oliver Elementary School to facilitate DIY air cleaner workshops to students as a part of Carter's Project. The workshop was held for 6 different classes grades 1-6 with students working in pairs to build low-cost, effective air cleaners.

"Last week, we were incredibly fortunate to welcome the BC Lung Foundation and Carter's Project to OES for a truly memorable visit", said Nikki Hutchison, Vice Principal at Oliver Elementary School (OES). "Our students had an absolute blast learning, participating, and connecting through such a meaningful activity and conversations. It was especially wonderful to meet Carter’s mom and brother and to hear firsthand about the heart and inspiration behind Carter’s Project. Their warmth, courage, and passion left a lasting impression on our entire school community."

Through these workshops over 50 DIY air cleaner units were built, allowing each classroom in the school to receive one to help improve indoor air quality. The remaining units were donated to Okanagan Falls Elementary and the Keremeos Library to ensure that other students and vulnerable families could benefit from the workshop as well.

It's always so special to see this work have a ripple effect in the community. Thank you to everyone who makes these initiatives possible and as we provide practical, tangible resources to vulnerable areas in our province. More Carter's Project impact to come in June!
