Between Chaos and Light: Remembering October 7 will bring the Greater Vancouver Jewish community together to commemorate the lives lost on October 7, 2023, and honour the heroes whose courage continues to inspire us.

Led by the community’s rabbis, this gathering will be a time for remembrance, reflection, grief, resilience, and unity.

In August 2025 in Victoria, the country’s oldest continuously operating synagogue was targeted with vicious antisemitic statements and libels, including: “Jews are evil,” "Genocide," and “Jews are murdering thousands of gentile children.”

The near mass-casualty attack at Belleville showed us where these kinds of conspiracy theories and libels about Jews and Israelis — whether about COVID, Gaza or anything else — can lead.

Thankfully, leaders across the country are beginning to wake up to the reality of what is happening.

Last month, the Carney government affirmed that antisemitism includes antizionism.

And last week, a B.C. court delivered an important message in its decision involving the perpetrator who targeted Victoria’s Congregation Emanu-El: “It is the collective attribution of responsibility to all Jews for the actions of Israel that renders the words antisemitic.”

Whether it is a leader of a federal party or a hateful extremists targeting a synagogue, holding Jews collectively responsible for Israel is antisemitism.

Words do not exist in a vacuum. Canada's security agencies are warning that when hatred and conspiracy theories are normalized, the consequences can be deadly.

A sweet New Year begins with gratitude.

In Squamish, 12 Rosh Hashanah baskets were delivered to valued local partners who have helped support the growth of Jewish life in the community.

Each basket included apples and honey from Jewish Federation of British Columbia, a simple and meaningful way to wish our partners a sweet and happy New Year.

These deliveries were a reminder of how much relationships matter, and how important it is to recognize the people, organizations, and businesses who help make Jewish life possible across BC.

Something wonderful is growing in the Tri-Cities.

The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver is bringing its established Early Childhood Education programming to the Burquest Jewish Community Centre in Coquitlam.

JCC Childcare at Burquest will offer a warm and welcoming place where children can learn, play, grow, and belong, with play-based learning, Jewish values, and an appreciation for diverse cultures.

The program is open to all families and will provide trusted childcare with experienced educators in a newly refreshed learning environment.

Join the Delta community for From Bubbie’s Kitchen Shabbatluck, a warm evening of food, memories, and connection inspired by the recipes and traditions passed down through our families.

Dust off an old cookbook, recreate a cherished recipe, or bring a dish that reminds you of someone special. Participants are invited to bring a vegetarian dish to share, along with the story or memory behind it.

Come hungry, come ready to share, and celebrate the tastes, stories, and traditions that bring our community together.

Bees, honey, creativity, and a sweet start to the New Year.

In Victoria, PJ Library partnered with the Kehila Group for a joyful Rosh Hashanah evening for young children and their families.

Inspired by the themes of bees and honey, children created cards for their families, learned about the important role bees play in nature, and decorated colourful flower pots with art materials, crafts, and colouring activities.

Rabbi Ilana from Kolot Mayim added a special touch to the evening by leading the children in singing the blessings, creating a warm and meaningful Jewish experience.

It was a beautiful evening of creativity, learning, family connection, and community, made possible through the partnership between PJ Library, the Kehila Group, and the JCC in Victoria.

From supporting newcomers and strengthening Jewish communities across the province, to expanding Holocaust education and preparing to gather in remembrance on October 7, this week’s message reminds us that community is built through welcome, learning, memory, and care.

As we celebrate Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, may we continue to connect, support, and strengthen one another.
