Across Canada, on September 30, we recognize and remember the First Nations peoples and Indigenous communities who have experienced immense loss and suffering through the effects of the residential school system and colonization by commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Inspired by the story of residential school survivor Phyllis (Jack) Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation.

We can recognize this day by wearing an Orange shirt on September 30, and by attending a community event, or by taking some quiet moments of reflection and reading up on British Columbia’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

This past Friday evening the City of Vancouver Engineering Streets branch celebrated the retirement of a 37 year CUPE 1004 member. There was an incredible turn out and show of appreciation by his fellow members and many managers as well. Congratulations on your achievements, retirement, and future endeavors Lui!

City of Vancouver Engineering and Parks Bargaining Committee had their first meeting on Tuesday. Members stay tuned for future updates regarding the bargaining process such as the bargaining survey going out and site visits to various City & Parks worksites.

As June comes to a close, CUPE 1004 recognizes National Indigenous History Month, and reaffirms our commitment to truth and reconciliation.
We acknowledge that we gather, work, and organize on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, specifically the \(x^{w}\)məθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
We honor and celebrate these Nations for taking care of these lands since time immemorial and to them we say hay ce:p q̓ə Thank you.

CUPE 1004 stands in solidarity with our amazing and vibrant 2SLGBTQ+ community.

We have a diverse membership that celebrates our differences and how we’re able to come together to support each other in allyship and direct action.

We hope through June that everyone had an amazing Pride month, though there are extra challenges we face in this community, we hold strong to our values of solidarity and continue to recognize, support and celebrate each other.

CUPE 1004 Members from City of Vancouver Engineering Services, Science World, and the Parks Board, along with the incoming President and Vice President spent Friday and Saturday volunteering their time at the Vancouver Landfill Open House. It was a great event to showcase the work our members do at the Vancouver Landfill in Delta.
