Today we were joined by the Mayor of Burnaby, Mike Hurley, to celebrate the official start of construction at Burnaby Grove Housing Co-op.

The Community Land Trust project will bring 119 affordable co-op homes to Burnaby.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the development of the first new housing co-op in Burnaby in decades”, said Thom Armstrong, CEO of the Co-operative Housing Federation of BC. “We hope this is just the first of many more opportunities to offer safe, secure, permanently affordable homes in thriving co-op- communities to Burnaby families.”

119 new co-op homes are coming to Burnaby, highlighting the impact municipal governments can have in bringing affordable housing to local communities.

Wilderness Parks 50th anniversary

They hosted a party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the co-op. In addition to sharing food, they also introduced icebreakers to help people learn more about their neighrbours and the co-op's history, with questions like:

"Name one thing in your home that belonged to another member and is now yours.", "What's your favourite season at the co-op and why?", "Shout out! What was the last kind thing you saw a neighbour do", and "Name a fun fact about another member that we might not know."

Cidalia said "I've lived at the coop for about 13/14 years now and it's the longest I've ever lived anywhere. I remember when we first moved in, Emma who was already 15, said she wished we had been able to live here when she was even younger because of the stability and growing up with other kids to play with. It has made a real difference in our lives to be here."

Each year on September 30, people across Canada observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and their communities.

September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day—an Indigenous-led movement that raises awareness of the individual, family and community impacts of the residential school system and affirms that Every Child Matters.

In recognition of this important day, Housing Central staff recently learned from YWCA BC leaders about moving from acknowledgement to action. The conversation created an opportunity to listen, reflect and consider the role organizations and housing providers can play in the ongoing journey of reconciliation.

Learning and reflection are important steps toward meaningful action and an ongoing commitment to reconciliation.
