People are often viewed through only one part of who they are. Some assume disability and 2SLGBTQIA+ identities are separate experiences, but many people live with both every day.

When disability support spaces ignore q***r identity, or when q***r spaces ignore disability, people can feel excluded from both communities.

True inclusion means recognizing the full person, respecting identity, and creating spaces where people feel safe to be themselves.

At HSSSBC, we believe real inclusion means creating communities where people can live as their full selves. Many people in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community continue to advocate for dignity, belonging, safety, and freedom from judgment. These are values that also guide our work in community support and inclusion.

We believe support starts with human connection, respect, and choice.

Everyone deserves to feel seen and valued for who they are.

Staying calm in an emergency is not always possible. Stress and fear are natural responses.
That is why planning should include what helps people feel calm. This can be emotional support, a familiar person, a routine, or clear and simple instructions.
These supports are not extra. They help people stay grounded and able to act.
HSSSBC values person centred and practical support. Plans should reflect real reactions and include what people need to feel supported.

Planning can become too complex. Too many steps, too much information, and unclear instructions can make it harder to act when it matters.
When plans become long checklists, people can feel confused or unsure what to do next.
In an emergency, simple and clear steps make it easier to respond quickly and stay in control.
HSSSBC values accessible and person centred support. Plans should be easy to understand, easy to follow, and built to work in real life.

Disability Income Update:
The Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction has changed the spousal rule so couples receiving disability assistance receive the same support allowance as if they were two single people. Now couples where one partner has the Persons with Disabilities designation will access increased annual earnings exemption.

Support may not always be available in an emergency. It can be delayed, unavailable, or change quickly.
That is why backup support matters. People need to know who to contact, what options they have, and what to do next.
People with disabilities are asking for plans that include clear backup support, not just one option.

Planning should not happen without the people it affects.
People with disabilities are asking to be included in decisions about their safety, support, and daily life. They know what works for them.
In an emergency, this matters even more. Plans are stronger when they reflect real needs, real preferences, and real experiences.
HSSSBC values self determination and person centred support. This means including people in planning, not making decisions for them.

Not every exit works in an emergency. For many people with disabilities, some routes are not safe or usable.
Stairs, narrow spaces, heavy doors, or unclear directions can make it hard or impossible to leave safely.
Emergency routes need to be accessible and realistic. A safe exit should work for the person who needs it.
