Today is National Seniors Day and International Day of Older Persons. 💛

Today, we celebrate older adults and the experience, knowledge, and connections they bring to our families and communities.

In long-term care, every resident deserves to be heard, respected, included, and supported with dignity.

We also recognize the families, caregivers, and care teams who support older adults every day.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡

Today, we honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities.

For long-term care communities, this is also a time to recognize and listen to Indigenous Elders, Survivors, residents, and families — and to respect the experiences and stories they choose to share.

May today be a time for listening, learning, reflection, and remembrance.

Every Child Matters.

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day. 💜

Today, we recognize people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, along with the families, care partners, and care teams who support them.

A person living with dementia is always more than a diagnosis. Their voice, choices, relationships, memories, and life experiences continue to matter.

In long-term care, we can help create more dementia-inclusive communities by listening with patience, treating every resident with dignity and respect, and supporting families and care partners along the way.

Today and every day, let’s lead with understanding, kindness, and connection.

Beyond Speaking Up: How Family Councils Turn Individual Voices into Collective Change

Many families in long-term care hesitate to speak up because they worry it could affect the care of someone they love. But families don’t have to navigate those concerns alone.

In our recent session, Karen Tyrell of Dementia Solutions and Lisa Dawson, President of ILTCCABC, explored how Family Councils can provide a safe, collaborative way for families, residents, and care teams to work together — turning individual concerns into positive, lasting change.

The session also highlighted practical resources for long-term care teams and resident care partners.

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Today, ILTCCABC celebrates the incredible impact of dogs and pet therapy in long-term care. 💙

Pet therapy is a meaningful non-clinical, therapeutic approach that can help address some of the many challenges faced by seniors living in care. A visit from a therapy dog can bring comfort, reduce stress and anxiety, encourage social interaction, spark memories, and even promote gentle physical activity.

Sometimes, a wagging tail, a gentle nuzzle, or a familiar furry friend can do what words and medicine cannot — bring joy, connection, comfort and a sense of home. 🐶❤️

On National Dog Day, we celebrate the four-legged friends, volunteers and organizations helping to make long-term care more compassionate, connected and person-centred.
