We’re leaders in the empowerment and education of children and youth with dyslexia and language-based learning differences in Vancouver, BC. Our fully accredited, independent school serves students in grades 1-12 provides a learner-centric environment with the most effective research-based methods to optimize personalized learning, cognitive development, and post secondary opportunities. The sun was out last week for our annual Mark It Read BBQ! ❤️

Mark It Read is all about raising awareness and showing support for the dyslexia community. Wearing red helps spark conversations about what it means to think and learn differently, while our students’ superhero capes are a reminder of all the strengths that can come with dyslexia.

A big thank you to our staff for making this event so special, and to our incredible parent community for the cupcakes that made the day extra sweet!

On October 23, we invite BC teachers to join us in Vancouver for our full-day workshop, Executive Function & The Writing Process.

Some learners struggle with executive function skills, but the skills that help them succeed in the writing process can apply to all learners.

We'll explore the facets of writing and how to teach it with a cognitive, cumulative and sequential approach that makes it accessible to your students.

You'll learn to:
🧑‍🏫 Mediate instruction
🧠 Develop oral language skills to facilitate higher-level thinking
🎧 Apply multisensory techniques for teaching the writing process

Congratulations to Fraser Academy's Mr. Jamie Girouard, an accomplished artist and ADST teacher, whom Western Living Magazine has celebrated as "One to Watch" in its maker category for Designers of the Year.

Executive functions (EF) are a collection of brain-based processes that help us self-regulate and work towards a goal.

We use them to pay attention, start something difficult, try another approach when a problem isn’t working, organize our ideas, or finish a project on time.

These processes have an enormous impact on learning, but they are largely invisible.

When a learner struggles with EF skills, what we see is often the outcome: the missing assignment, the unfinished paragraph, the forgotten instructions, or the student who simply hasn’t started.

It is easy to mistake an invisible skill gap for a lack of effort.

Last week, we kicked off Dyslexia Awareness Month by raising the Dyslexia Canada flag outside our school!

Throughout October, we’ll join communities around the world in raising awareness and understanding of dyslexia, while celebrating the many strengths of our students. It’s a chance to come together, share stories, and recognize the different ways that dyslexic minds learn, think, and contribute.

This October, FAx is partnering with Kitsilano Neighbourhood House to offer a Free Early Literacy Screening for children aged 4–7.

- Online Parent Workshop (Zoom): October 14 | 6:30 – 8:00 PM.
- In-Person Screening: October 16 | Between 2:00 – 5:00 PM at Kitsilano Neighbourhood Housing (please prepare for a 30 minute time slot)

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we are once again honoured to fly this flag outside our school.

Designed by an FA alumnus in collaboration with his grandmother, an artist and master weaver from the Musqueam Nation, the work invites us to consider our connection to the land, respect, and reconciliation.

Following our Orange Shirt Day assembly earlier this week, we invite our community to pause, reflect, and continue learning from Indigenous voices while considering our own role in reconciliation.
