rice & beans theatre rice & beans theatre was founded by co-artistic directors Pedro Chamale and Derek Chan in 2010.

rice & beans dedicates itself to defining the nature and function of a contemporary theatre that challenges the role of story and narrative. rice & beans focuses on the creation, incubation and production of original performances. Through countless hours of vigorous trial-and-error, with intimate passion and delicate violence, we write, adapt, and devise work that is relevant and artistically responsible. Shelby Shukaliak is an actor and producer based in Vancouver, BC. She began working with Gokko Creative in 2016 as a 2nd Assistant Stage Manager and Assistant Production Manager on NeOn, and in 2018, joined the company as an Artistic Associate. Her creative interests lie heavily in creating genre theatre and film, using highly stylized choices to tell diverse stories, and jamming in a vampire romance wherever possible. She co-authored a chapter with Ernest Mathijs and Eve O’Dea about Canadian female horror filmmakers, published in Bloody Women: Women Directors of Horror in 2021.

Karen Chiang 蔣家寧 is a Producer, Stage Manager, Technician, and Event Coordinator. Her recent projects include Jade Circle with rice & beans theatre, Constellations with All Bodies Dance Project, Lights of Hope with Eos Lightmedia at St. Paul’s Hospital, and I Swallowed a Moon Made of Iron with Music Picnic.
As a strong believer in the therapeutic power of the arts, Karen channels her passion into work that delves into culture, identity, and languages, creating spaces where people come together to reflect, celebrate, and grow. Through her projects, she fosters joy and dialogue that strengthen local bonds and inspire shared stories. Recent recipient of a BCAC Early Career Development Grant, Karen continues to grow as an arts leader committed to elevating underrepresented voices.

Siobhan Powell (she/her) is a stage manager, production manager, and visual artist gratefully living and working on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the (Musqueam); Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples. She received her BFA in Drama with a specialization in Technical Theatre and Production from the U of A in 2012, and continues to enjoy working in theatre production, primarily based out of the great PN

Behind every show is a team working to bring the community into the theatre. Over the next posts, get to know the people connecting Red Demon with audiences across Vancouver.

What keeps us from embracing those who are different? Hideki Noda’s Red Demon makes its Canadian premiere this week, directed by Mayumi Yoshida.

In September 2025, he produced his first immersive theatre production, STAND, at the Vancouver Fringe Festival. The show welcomed more than 300 audience members across six performances and raised approximately CAD 3,200 from 62 supporters through crowdfunding.

He is currently developing short films and theatre projects, working across project development, scriptwriting, fundraising, and team building.

Drawing on his experience as a performer, Yutaro focuses on creating an environment where creators can do their best work and developing ideas into viable projects. Rather than simply waiting for roles or opportunities, he aims to create his own projects and opportunities and become a producer who connects Japan with the world from Vancouver.

Karter Masuhara is a trans/non-binary artist, producer, and arts manager based in Vancouver on the occupied xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlil̓wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories. As an artist they have written and directed an award-winning short film, Where to P**s, which has been entered into multiple film festivals globally. They have also written and self-produced their own play, Before They Cut Down Our Tree, which was presented at the 2023 Vancouver Fringe Festival. They have co-produced the short film Dark Room (2025) and are co-writing the short film Baby Cafe (2026). Currently they are also developing their new multilingual solo piece, Do You Understand Me Now which will have a development presentation at Place des Arts.

Meet our Director & Translator, Mayumi Yoshida 📣👹

Mayumi Yoshida is from Tokyo, Japan. Her father being a journalist, she had an international childhood living in Washington D.C., Brussels, and Tokyo. In Tokyo, from 2005-2009 she starred in 25 theatre productions. She moved to Vancouver in 2010 to pursue her dream to be an actor in North America. She is a graduate of Vancouver Film School’s Acting for Film and Television program.

As well as a theatre artist, Mayumi is also an award-winning actress and filmmaker.

She’s an alumna of Women In the Director’s Chair, WBD Access x Canadian Academy Writers Program (2021) and Directors Program (2023), TIFF Writer’s Studio, and TIFF Netflix Talent Accelerator Fellowship.

Her directorial debut short film AKASHI which she wrote and acted in as well, won Outstanding Writer out of 4500 films at NBCUniversal Short Film Festival, Best Female Director at Vancouver Short Film Festival and many more awards internationally. In 2019, Mayumi received the Newcomer Award at Vancouver Women in Film Festival’s Spotlight awards for her success in multiple fields. The latest Music Video she directed, Different Than Before by Amanda Sum, starring Tzi Ma (Mulan) earned a Vimeo Staffpick, Jury Award at SXSW Music Video Competition, and screened at Oscar / BAFTA qualifying film festivals. In 2023 it also got nominated for Music Video of the Year at the JUNO Awards. Mayumi recently worked on the A24/AppleTV+ series SUNNY starring Rashida Jones and Hidetoshi Nishijima as an Associate Producer. Her first feature AKASHI, which was shot in Japan/Canada is set to premiere in 2025.

Before the Red Demon takes the stage at the Firehall Arts Centre, we want you to meet the people bringing this world to life. 🎭✨

Agnes Hui is a stage/production manager, voice actor, translator, and event planner. Originally from Hong Kong, she is now based in so-called Vancouver, the ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Notable stage management credits include JADE CIRCLE by Jasmine Chen at Great Canadian Theatre Company, Ottawa, HEAVEN FM by Hong Kong Exile at Vancouver Art Gallery and 2025 Festival TransAmériques, 2025 HARVEST: DANCE FLOOR MEMOIRS by Theatre Terrific, 2024 Tour of RESIDUALS (住み‧墨) by Shion Skye Carter, and LA MITCHIN DI MITCHIF by V’ni Dansi. Recent voice acting projects include A YEAR OF BLESSINGS (Cantonese) by Five Blessings Collective and THE MADONNA OF ASIA by Choy-Ping Ní Chléirigh-Ng at The New Theatre, Dublin.

Agnes is a key member of Vancouver-based nonprofit HK House, dedicated to diaspora community building and the preservation of Hong Kong culture. The volunteer collective is the proud organizer of the annual Vancouver Hong Kong Fair.

Asuka Otaki is a Vancouver-based creative producer bringing her experience from film, performance, and creative production into theatre. Originally from Japan, Asuka has always been connected to performance. She began as a competitive baton twirler, performing on stage from a young age before becoming a coach and founding her own baton twirling team in Vancouver. Moving from performer to mentor and organizer gave her a new perspective on the creative process, allowing her to experience the care, coordination, and teamwork that bring a performance to life.
Her creative journey has taken her through event production, branding, and film. She has worked as a Creative Director and Art Director, collaborating with artists and creative teams to turn ideas into reality. Her film credits include productions such as Shōgun and Neuromancer, where she continued to explore storytelling through a behind-the-scenes lens.

Andie Lloyd is a q***r interdisciplinary artist and community advocate, raised and living on Qayqayt territory. She works as a lighting designer and media artist and runs matcha pop-ups about town. She is most passionate about multilingual performance and making language accessible to all audiences. Recent design credits include lighting design for MY HOUSE (FakeKnot), projection design and live visuals for Danceboy (Theatre Conspiracy), projection and lighting design for Secret Ingredients (Keely O’Brien) and projection design for Fat Joke (Neworld Theatre). Andie a member of the Associated Designers of Canada.

Anju Singh is a composer, musician, and sound/media artist based in Vancouver, BC. Her composition work moves between dense, immersive sonic environments using thick, overlapping layers, electronics, and sound design and very minimalist gestures and simple acoustic sounds that rely instead on the complexity and layers of timbre within single sound sources or very slight shifts between sounds. To create her works, Anju plays strings, percussion, woodwind instruments, and self-built instruments as well as electronics, noise, synthesizers and effects processors.

Anju has toured, performed, and presented her work at festivals and events internationally including across Canada, in the United States, Japan, Mexico, and Europe. In addition to her active sound and music practice, she has won awards for her multi-channel sound and video installation works.

Megan Lane is a Vancouver based interdisciplinary artist working in theatre as a technician, a set designer, a performer, and as a puppet maker and puppeteer. Megan is a graduate of Douglas College’s Stagecraft and Event Technology program and SFU’s Theatre Production and Design program. Pedro Chamale
Red Demon
Pedro Chamale (he/him) was born and raised on Treaty 8 territory (Chetwynd, BC) and now creates on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. He completed Douglas College’s acting program and earned a BFA in Theatre Performance from SFU. Pedro is a freelance director, playwright, performer, and Artistic Director of rice & beans theatre, which he co-founded with Derek Chan. His leadership spans roles with Neworld Theatre, rEvolver Festival, Banff Centre, Canadian Latinx Theatre Artist Coalition, and Latinx Theatre Commons. His recognitions include SFU’s 2021 Young Alumni Excellence Award and a 2023 BC “Breaking Boundaries” award nomination. His play Peace Country was published by Playwrights Canada Press and he has also written for the Canadian Theatre Review along other published anthologies. Next Pedro is the lead playwright for East Van Panto: Hercules with Theatre Replacement and the Cultch this November. You can find out more about Pedro at his website www.pedrochamale.com.
