🇺🇦DSUD is excited to bring back our Kozak Camp on Sunday, October 18th!

We started this boys-only workshop a few years ago to inspire our young kozaks - to teach them famous Ukrainian tricks and steps, to strengthen them, and to get them excited about dancing.

This year, we are extremely excited to be welcoming Maksym Zabutnyy as our guest instructor.

Here is a bit more about Maksym:
Maksym Serhiyovych Zabutnyy was born in Ternopil, Ukraine, where he lived the first part of his life before immigrating to Canada in 2004.

Born to Liana and Serhiy Zabutnyy, both professional Ukrainian dancers with Nadzbruchanka, he grew up in an environment filled with high-calibre Ukrainian dance opportunities, practices, and performances.

After moving to Canada, Maksym continued his Ukrainian dance education under his parents at Zabutnyy Dance Company. Alongside Ukrainian dance, Maksym began ballet at Martin School of Dance and would later enroll in jazz, tap, hip hop, acrobatics, and contemporary classes.

During his time at Martin School of Dance, he took part in CDTA Jazz and Tap, ADAPT Jazz and Tap, and RAD Ballet exams.

During his competitive dance journey, Maksym received many high-mark solo and duo awards, dance convention scholarships, and dance titles.

In 2010, Maksym won the national title of "Mr. Teen CanDance North America" in Orlando, Florida.

For 17 years, Maksym has been performing with Zabutnyy Dance Company's Ensemble! He has instructed schools around Saskatchewan and Manitoba, adjudicated many festivals in the prairies, and enjoys creating choreography for groups and ZDC's ensemble.

Our camp is a one-hour long class from 10:30-11:30am at 805 E. Pender St, Vancouver.

Class is open to any boy ages 6-14.
The class fee is only $20!

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation calls on non-Indigenous organizations to centre Indigenous voices and experiences, to acknowledge the lasting impacts of colonialism and the residential school system on Indigenous communities, and to reaffirm our commitment to decolonization and reconciliation. As an organization formed by settlers to this land, we must recognize the ways in which the forced removal of Indigenous communities is directly tied to the immigration of early Ukrainians to Vancouver and the rest of so-called Canada.

At the same time, we are proud to be part of a lasting legacy of community and solidarity between Ukrainian Canadians and Indigenous peoples. On this day of reflection, the AUUC Vancouver Branch wishes to reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation and to nurturing meaningful relationships with the Indigenous communities whose lands we occupy.

Vancouver’s Downtown East Side, where our branch’s Ukrainian Hall has stood for nearly 100 years, is home to many Indigenous-focused and Indigenous-led organizations whose work supports Indigenous youth, residential school survivors, and community members living in this area. AUUC Vancouver fully supports the fantastic work that these organizations are doing, and we urge our own members, along with the wider community, to learn more about their efforts and how you can take action to support them.

A (late) message from the AUUC Vancouver Branch in recognition of Ukrainian Independence Day.

"Today (August 24th, 2026) marks the 35th Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence Day recognizing Ukraine’s existence as a sovereign country with a proud heritage and a rich and unique culture. We at the AUUC Vancouver wish to acknowledge and celebrate the resilience of the Ukrainian people and their determination to retain their autonomy throughout the country’s history and particularly at this time of strife.

Independence Day acknowledges more than just the signing of a declaration or the recording of a legal document. It celebrates the concept of individuality and self-determination for a people, a culture, and a heritage that is valued and worthy of recognition and preservation. Ukrainians and their descendants throughout the world continue to honour their Ukrainian heritage through literature, music, dance, and folk traditions preserving the beauty and spirit of Ukrainian culture.

The AUUC Vancouver Branch stands with the Ukrainian people in celebrating their independence, and their wishes for a peaceful life and self-determination for their country. May there be many more Independence Day anniversaries for the people of Ukraine.

Join us on Sunday for the Ukie Fest opening day celebration!

From 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the lower hall fills with vendors — makers, embroiderers, and food artisans — including Kalyna’s Café where you can purchase meals including pyrohy, cabbage rolls, sausage and more. Visit our wonderful vendors and pick up a Ukrainian keepsake or souvenir. There will be a limited supply of frozen pyrohy and borshch for sale so come early to place your orders.

The upper hall will feature exciting workshops for dancers, singers and crafters.

Join members of the VUFO as they demonstrate various Ukrainian Instruments in their collection. David Skulski – organologist and educator, Liam Watson – bassoonist and Maryana Mukha – bandurist will be on hand to share some of these instruments with you.

2:30 PM – 4:00 PM – EXPLORING THE VOICE with Olesia Shewchuk

An experiential workshop exploring the voice through breath, movement, sound, and song. Participants will explore vocal colour, texture, resonance, dynamics, and expression in a supportive group setting, ending with a group singalong of Ukrainian folk songs.
