Batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but improper handling or disposal—especially lithium-ion batteries—can pose serious fire risks to people, property, firefighters, and the environment. Running throughout July and August, the Protect What Matters. Be Battery Safe campaign helps municipalities educate residents about these risks and encourages safe battery recycling through approved drop-off locations.

Remember: never place batteries in the garbage or recycling bins.

Delegates embraced the fun by dressing to impress in our Olympic Spirit, Oh Canada!, and Best Dressed Overall categories, showcasing creativity and plenty of Canadian pride. Congratulations to all of our winners and participants for bringing such enthusiasm and energy to the conference.

Surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, abundant wildlife, and spectacular views, participants enjoyed an unforgettable golf experience at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club during this year's Canadian Solid Waste Conference.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., this stunning 18-hole championship course provided the perfect setting for networking, friendly competition, and connecting with colleagues before the conference officially began.

Mark Wills Canadian Chapter Builder Awards (2026)

The Mark Wills Canadian Chapter Builder Awards recognize outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to SWANA chapters across Canada. Mark Wills, founder of Geoware, was a dedicated SWANA member, Ontario Chapter Board Director, organizer and sponsor of the first Canadian Waste Resource Symposium, and creator of the Canadian Chapter Builder Awards.

After receiving the Ontario Chapter Builder Award in 2016, the awards were renamed in his memory in 2020. Generously sponsored by Geoware Inc., the 2026 recipients are Deborah Searle (Atlantic Chapter), Debbie Conrad (Ontario Chapter), Francis Fortin (Quebec Chapter), Michel Lefebvre (Northern Lights Chapter), and Emy Lai (Pacific Chapter, BC & Yukon).
