Free Small Claims support is now available through Access Pro Bono BC

Representing yourself in Small Claims Court can be daunting, and for disputes under $35,000, hiring a lawyer may not be realistic.

That’s why Access Pro Bono has teamed up with BC lawyer and certified legal coach Matt Canzer, a founding supervising lawyer with our Everyone Legal Clinic, to offer 15 free Small Claims support packages.

Each package includes:
- A seat in Matt’s course, How to Represent Yourself in BC Small Claims Court
- A one-hour pro bono legal advice session with Matt
- All at no cost to the client

In 2024/25, 69% of appearances in BC Small Claims matters involved a party without a lawyer — the highest unrepresented rate of the Provincial Court’s three divisions.

If you’re dealing with a Small Claims matter and facing financial hardship, contact Access Pro Bono to see if you qualify.

Law firms: If you have a Small Claims matter you can’t take on and the person is experiencing financial hardship, please consider referring them to Access Pro Bono.

Join the Islamophobia Legal Assistance Hotline for an informative workshop on Islamophobia and your legal rights.

In this session, participants will examine common forms and manifestations of Islamophobia in policing, including racial and religious profiling, surveillance, discrimination, and barriers to reporting incidents. The workshop will also provide an overview of the rights and protections available to Muslim community members when interacting with law enforcement.

About the speakers:

Hasan Alam is a labour and human rights lawyer. He is currently the president of the BCCLA and serves as a Committee Member for the Islamophobia Hotline.

Natalie Chan is a Legal Counsel at the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, where she practices administrative law, health law and policy, and professional regulation. She is also a Committee Member for the Islamophobia Hotline.

Access Pro Bono BC is looking for two new volunteer Directors to join our Board this fall.
