WFCA Member Spotlight: Strategic Fire Control 🔥🌲

Strategic Fire Control has spent more than 30 years helping communities prepare for wildfire through fuel reduction, structure protection, and wildland firefighting in BC and Alberta, including near Cranbrook, Merrit, Burns Lake, Terrace, Peace River, Edson and more.

In 2023, that strategic work paid off on the ʔaq̓am reserve near Cranbrook, where recent fuel reduction treatments helped slow a wildfire's growth and allowed crews to contain and extinguish it before it became catastrophic.

As wildfire seasons intensify, proactive work like this is more important than ever.

Noah’s career started on the planting line in 2003 and went from being on a crew to leading one.

Fast-forward over a decade, and he is now the Vice President of WFCA and General Manager of Zanzibar Holdings Ltd. Noah brings real on-the-ground experience to sector leadership. He understands what it takes to deliver restoration work — because he’s done it.

Recent provincial and federal investments totalling more than $355 million are helping advance reforestation, wildfire recovery, and habitat restoration projects across BC.

For WFCA, this is encouraging news. Continued investment in restoration helps strengthen forest resilience while creating opportunities for the contractors, crews, nurseries, foresters, and Indigenous partners delivering this work on the ground.

Spring planting season is wrapping up. 🌱

Over the past few months, millions of trees have been planted across western Canada. Long days, remote conditions, and physically demanding work.

Now the season shifts, so does the work.

While summer planting does occur, the summer chapter includes seedling checks, vegetation management, and ongoing care. Forest restoration moves with nature.

To every crew that put in the work this spring: thank you for the skill, grit and commitment you bring to the field. The trees you planted today will shape landscapes for decades to come.🌲

Did you know that 75% of the forest restoration workforce is between 21 and 34 years old? 🌲

This is a sector powered by young Canadians doing physically demanding work, that requires agility and endurance. This meaningful work on the ground - restoring forests and supporting wildfire resilience is where our youth gain real-world leadership experience that prepares them for their futures in forestry.

37% of those young workers are students, building skills and earning income while continuing their education.

Forest restoration isn’t just about planting trees. It’s about building the next generation of environmental professionals.

The Globe and Mail’s latest feature, which includes WFCA Executive Director John Betts, underscores the scale of Canada’s tree deficit and the urgency of rebuilding resilient forests.

This is exactly why WFCA exists: to represent the contractors and crews delivering restoration on the ground and to push for policy that matches the scale of the challenge.

Emergency response time on the forest floor matters. That’s why we work with Helicopter Emergency Services (HEMS). 🚁

Aeromedical is a not-for-profit team of paramedics, physicians and technical rescue specialists who deliver advanced medical care in some of BC's most remote locations.

On standby every daylight hour, and working in partnership with helicopter operators, they can reach forest operations within minutes.

HEMS, such as TEAAMS, are considered the standard of care for emergency response planning in the forestry sector. Organizations like TEAAM are part of the safety infrastructure that supports restoration and forestry work across the province.

Prescribed burns are carefully planned and executed by certified professionals. By removing excess combustible materials before wildfire season, they help reduce the intensity of future fires and support healthier forests.
