Our popular annual nerikō-making workshop is back and now open for public registration. Learn about the materials and history of Japanese "kneaded incense" or nerikō 練香 and make your own to take home and enjoy. We will be featuring two new blends this year, curated by the Senzan Goryū School of Kōdō (incense ceremony) in Kyoto. Jijū 侍従 is one of the Six Classic Blends 六種の薫物 known since classical times, and Aouma 白馬 is offered in celebration of the Year of the Fire Horse. It is our great privilege to present HANAYAGI Toshikotono (Mamie Kakimoto) performing Nihon Buyō at O-Tsukimi tomorrow evening.

For the finale of the evening’s program, HANAYAGI Toshikotono will perform “Tama-usagi” (The Jewel Rabbit, or Moon Rabbit), a short traditional dance piece playing on the theme of the rabbit who lives in the moon and related folk tales.

We are so delighted to have Jean Zou .zou of Ikenobo School creating several autumnal Ikebana arrangements for O-Tsukimi.

Come view the arrangements while Jean provides a short explanation about the cultural significance of the seasonal floral materials she uses, the role of the concept of the moon in Ikebana, and the importance of seasonality and seasonal celebrations in the Japanese arts.

Last month, we were delighted to host Amanda Fu, certified professor of the Ohara School of Ikebana, for a hands-on workshop inspired by Tanabata — a traditional Japanese summer festival centered around love and wishes.

Following a beautiful demonstration, participants were then guided to create their own ikebana arrangement. Using seasonal flowers and branches, everyone had a different style container to explore.

This workshop was a peaceful and creative way to connect with the summer season and we look forward to hosting more ikebana workshops in the future!

We would like to send a huge, heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported our very first fundraiser—whether in person, online, or through donations. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to raise over $5,000 towards our operational budget, which helps us to maintain the infrastructure needed to keep our programs running. We're so grateful to have such a warm and enthusiastic community sharing in our mission to make traditional Japanese arts and culture accessible in meaningful ways!

Special thanks also to the incomparable BUSHIDO duo featuring Alcvin Ryūzen Ramos and Nori Akagi for the live musical entertainment that made the afternoon so much fun!
