As part of our Artist Spotlight series for the Spelling Bee Challenge silent auction, we are excited to feature artists whose generosity is helping support children’s literacy programs across B.C.

Today, we are proud to highlight Olivier Salvas. Olivier's foray into art and fashion began in collaboration with Charlie’s Charmed ARTFASHION, which premiered at the Winnipeg Fine Arts Gallery in March 2022. This ongoing project has since been showcased across Canada, with the ARTFASHION SHOP now established at Vancouver’s Artisan Avenue, a winner at the Canadian Choice Award 2025.

A voice for social justice, Olivier has contributed as a columnist on Radio-Canada (CBC Radio). His expertise extends to hosting art panels nationwide for organizations like the Federation of Canadian Artists and Partial Gallery. Since 2022, Olivier has curated the British Columbia Housing Central Conference, orchestrating exhibitions that feature over 25 Canadian artists. He also serves as a workshop facilitator for the Outsiders Arts Festival, presented by Community Arts Vancouver, supporting and uplifting emerging artists.

🐝 WORD STORY FRIDAY 🐝

Some everyday words have surprisingly cosmic origins...

This week's word: disaster ⭐

The word comes from the Latin roots dis ("bad") and astro ("star"). Centuries ago, people believed that unfortunate events were caused by the influence of a "bad star."

Thankfully, we've found more reliable things to blame for our problems since then. 😉

What word do you think has a surprisingly strange origin story? Let us know in the comments!

Think you know your words? Put your word knowledge to the test at ONE TO ONE’s Spelling Bee Challenge on June 11 at beautiful VanDusen Botanical Garden. 🐝

As part of our Artist Spotlight series for the Spelling Bee Challenge silent auction, we are excited to feature artists whose generosity is helping support children’s literacy programs across B.C.

Today, we are proud to highlight Margaret Davidson. Margaret's work is driven by a passion for experimentation with colour, texture, and diverse artistic techniques. Drawing on studies in monoprinting, watercolour, acrylic painting, and mixed media, Margaret’s creative practice is rooted in curiosity, exploration, and continuous learning.

Margaret views art as both a source of healing and a means of connection, and strives to create pieces that evoke joy, inspiration, and a sense of well-being in those who experience them.

This week, we are proud to highlight Dirrie DeBruin. Dirrie is a Vancouver Island artist who specializes in stained glass.

Dirrie has called Vancouver Island home since 1996, though her journey in Canada began 42 years ago after moving from the Netherlands.

A self-taught artist, Dirrie's path into the world of stained glass started twelve years ago; what was a passion for collecting became a desire to learn the craft when she set out to repair a broken piece.

Finding inspiration in nature: pets and wildlife, and the local beaches, Dirrie creates intricate works that reflect the beauty of her surroundings.

Dirrie typically creates her art as heartfelt gifts for friends and family, and has crafted this special piece exclusively for the ONE TO ONE auction.

Some lunch foods have unexpectedly dramatic backstories…

What everyday food was named after a real person? 🥪👤

This week’s word: sandwich.

The sandwich is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English nobleman who supposedly asked for meat tucked between slices of bread so he could keep eating without interrupting his card game.

His convenient snack became so associated with him that people started ordering “the same as Sandwich.”

And the name stuck.

Drop a food word in the comments that you think might have an interesting backstory, and we may feature it in a future Word Story Friday post!

Think you know your words? Put your word knowledge to the test at ONE TO ONE’s Spelling Bee Challenge on June 11 at beautiful VanDusen Botanical Garden. 🐝
