Bike to Work Vancouver

Bike to Work Vancouver Bike to Work Vancouver is a social space that helps to prepare Vancouver’s new and aspiring cycle commuters for life on the road.

http://biketoworkvancouver.com/ The Bike to Work Vancouver (BTWV) website invites Vancouver’s new and inexperienced cyclists to participate in an online community with six veteran riders who act as virtual mentors. The cycle commutes of these six veterans are depicted in short films housed on the BTWV site, and visitors have the opportunity to experience these virtual cycle commutes and connect wi

th veteran riders via functions built into the site and through this page. The BTWV page also serves as a space where issues of concern can be raised, discussed and resolved where necessary. Together, these collaborative spaces encourage problem solving and knowledge sharing in an environment that supports growth and learning. Simply put, Bike to Work Vancouver enables cyclists to pool their strengths and discover solutions to common problems together.

Love this event brought to you by HUB: cyclists, motorists and mass transit users go head to head to head in a commuter challenge. Guess who won?

On Wednesday at Pacific Centre, bike commuters took top spots across the board at the HUB Cycling Share the Road Challenge.

Beginning in morning rush hour from locations around Metro Vancouver — including points in Vancouver, North Vancouver and Richmond — nine teams engaged in friendly competition to see which mode of travel could commute downtown the fastest. Each team consisted of one person in a car, on public transit, and on bike, and included representatives from car2go, Vancity, Denman Bike Shop, eProdigy Bikes, HUB Cycling, Tannus Tires, The Georgia Straight, TravelSmart, and the Vancouver Airport Authority.

The results — all nine bike commuters arrived ahead of the other members of their teams, including one who combined cycling with a ride on the Canada Line skytrain from Richmond, and one who used an electric-assist bike from South Vancouver.

Thanks so much to our Bike to Work Week Sponsors for participating! Special thanks to Cadillac-Fairview's Vancouver Properties for hosting the event.

Ever been behind the wheel of your car and wondered, “why isn’t that cyclist using the bike lane?” There’s probably a very good reason: http://bit.ly/SHCDfJ

Bike lanes tend to have a polarizing effect on Vancouver road users: we either love them or we hate them. Those in the former camp tend to be the cyclists who use bike lanes (and their moms), while...

Ever been frustrated by the behaviour of a cyclist? Me too! But take a closer look and you may realize that we aren’t the reckless, rule-breaking hooligans we’re often made out to be.

Which Metro Vancouver employers are the most bike friendly? HUB holds the first ever Bike Friendly Business Awards to celebrate the best of the best!

I needed a good news bike story this month. One to remind me just how lucky I am to be a cyclist in Vancouver. I’ve been feeling disheartened lately by negative news stories, malicious online comme...

Last weekend cyclist Edward Hoey was assaulted on the streets of Vancouver. Though the assault was witnessed by several people and caught on video, the Vancouver Police pressed no charges. Most reports have focused on the physical assault, but I argue that the assault perpetrated by the motorist while still in his vehicle was far more serious.

This past weekend, an unidentified motorist assaulted cyclist Edward Hoey on the streets of Vancouver. A passerby captured the final moments of the assault on video. Given that the unnamed motorist...

Some great tips for avoiding a crash. Most of these are specific to road riding, but many of the skills described are equally applicable to city riding. Stay safe!

Did you make a New Year's resolution to ride your bike more? If so, I hope you're better at keeping your promises than I am!

A couple of months ago, I made a promise to stop using my car to get to and from work, and then I promptly broke it. Turns out it was a promise that my body could not keep. As I’ve written about pr...

Dealing with an injury? Find out what's really wrong with you instead of worrying about it!

Last week I wrote about a disheartening knee injury that forced me to postpone my plans to reinvent myself as a full time cycle commuter.

Is it a long-term trend or just a reflection of the recession on the Continent?
