Registration is now OPEN for this trip, which will be the second and last before the heat of summer coincides with the end of the breeding season for most species. The leader, Paul Prappas, is just back from the Aleutians - an idea, if you don't know Paul, of how serious he is about birds and birding. He knows the Kootenays as well as anyone you will find out in the field.

To express an interest in taking part in the trip, email me at [email protected].

The central location will be Nelson - worth travelling to for many reasons other than the wildlife. Although, there are some who might comment that the inhabitants are part of the wildlife. Details will be sent by email; that should be with you shortly.

I will stop taking expressions of interest by the end of the week, Friday May 29th.

9 May 2026 will go down as a remarkable day in birding history. For the first time ever, Global Big Day birders documented more than 8,000 bird species in one day, a new world record, set by the largest community of bird enthusiasts ever united for a single event.

Tofino Shorebird Festival is on!! Did you know: Western sandpipers on migration rely on an unusual food source at many of their key stopover sites - diatoms! These single-celled algae each contain a microscopic drop of rich oil. Using special hairs on their tongues, birds strain diatoms out of drops of water they suck up from the surface of wet mud.
