Georgia State University researchers have developed a novel treatment for HIV-1 using llama-derived nanobodies. These nanobodies are about one-tenth the size of conventional antibodies. They can target and neutralize various HIV-1 strains more successfully due to their special structure and flexibility.

Under the leadership of Assistant Professor Jianliang Xu, the group constructed a triple tandem configuration for these nanobodies. Impressively, this strategy neutralized 96% of various HIV-1 strains. They paired these nanobodies with antibodies that neutralize broad spectrum (bNAbs). With this combination, a novel antibody with almost complete neutralizing power was produced. The strategy may greatly expand available therapy options and result in HIV treatments that are more effective.

Developed by Allan Doctor, a lab in Baltimore tested a white rabbit with ErythroMer, an experimental blood substitute. Some of the rabbit’s blood was siphoned out and replaced with ErythroMer. As a result, the rabbit’s heart rate and blood pressure were healthy. “Recycled” human hemoglobin is the ingredient of ErythroMer. This artificial “blood” can be freeze-dried into powder and mixed with saline. ErythroMer can be used to save lives when blood supplies are limited.
