Ancestral Food Ways

Ancestral Food Ways With a dedicated focus on advocating for and providing essential land-based education for indigenous food sovereignty.

Grassroot organization committed to food re-indigenization, Ancestral Food Ways is about restoring the spiritual, mental, and emotional wellness of the people and land. The Ancestral FoodWays Collective Society (AFW) is a grassroots organization that, over the last 4 years, established an Indigenous Food Fusion Kitchen and a Milpa System Garden during the establishment of Tent City at Strathcona P

ark. AFW operates in Downtown Eastside, and its impact extends beyond geographical boundaries, preserving ancestral knowledge and fostering a connection to the land. Rooted in the mission of passing knowledge to the coming 7 generations, AFW compiled from elders' teachings the Indigenous Food Relationship Framework. This comprehensive structure, consisting of four pillars—Biocultural Memory, Infrastructure for Traditional Cooking, Seeds of Knowledge, Health of soils and Sacred Territory—forms the backbone of AFW's commitment to cultural preservation and promotion of traditional food practices. Going beyond theoretical concepts, AFW's dedication to indigenous food sovereignty is a lived experience embedded in the daily practices of growing, harvesting, and preparing traditional foods. The society has cultivated a community network, mostly in Coast Salish Territories, fostering unity and a shared sense of purpose through advocacy and educational initiatives that unite communities. The youth cohort, once beneficiaries of AFW's initiatives, now stand as ambassadors of change, embodying resilience and strength derived from a profound connection to the land. Their stories intertwine with the plants in the garden, symbolizing a commitment to cultural preservation and environmental stewardship.

Garden Stories at the Biocultural Corridor Kumkumalay

Walking the land yesterday morning, learning, and getting our hands in the soil.

We spent the day weeding, laying woodchips, and talking about Labrador tea; wondering if we can learn from it and grow it. But the deepest lessons came from listening John Spence shared stories of Kumkumalay (so-called Vancouver), his family, and their resistance to colonization. He reminded us that in Coast Salish cosmovision, we are the land. Plants, animals, and soil are our relatives, just as important as we are.

We reflected on what it means to bring heritage seeds here respectfully; understanding their cycles before introducing them, ensuring we don’t pressure the ecosystem. Growing culturally relevant foods interculturally means actively supporting the restoration of the hosting culture. Hand in hand.

We ended the day sharing a Kumkumalay-style salmon soup with udon, and Atzin’s wild raspberry leaf & dandelion seed sandwich!

Next week: The “Be Children Again Olympics” and planting the medicines and foods requested by the Elders. Get ready!

What a beautiful day in the garden!

We gathered as a community today: sharing food, sharing ideas, and getting to work. A big focus right now is laying wood chips across the garden beds and pathways. This is one of the best things we can do for our soil: wood chips suppress grass and invasive plants, retain moisture, improve soil health over time, and reduce the need for weeding. If you haven’t tried it in your own garden, we highly recommend it!

We also took time today to sit down and plan the garden; mapping out planting zones, deciding what crops and plants go where, and thinking ahead to the seasons to come. Good planning now means a more abundant harvest later.

And the best part? We got plants in the ground today!

If you’d like to get involved, come out and join us. Everyone is welcome; whether you’re an experienced gardener or just curious. The more hands, the more we grow

Hello dear community,
We’re still moving through a cold in our household, and after listening to what our bodies need, we feel it’s best to stay home and rest today. We also want to be mindful not to spread the virus and to help keep our community well. We’ll take this time to recover gently and hope to be back in the garden with everyone next week.

Thank you for holding us with understanding and care. Sending love to you all 💛

Ingrid

We had another wonderful day of volunteering at the AFW site today! 🌞 The garden team pruned while the carving team sanded the pole. We ended the day sharing a delicious canned salmon spread in fresh sourdough 😋. Thank you so much who came and supported. We hope to see you and many more next Wednesday!
