Fraser Riverkeeper

Fraser Riverkeeper We’re guardians of the Fraser — one of the world’s great wild salmon rivers. Fin Donnelly is the Fraser Riverkeeper.

Join the Fraser River Challenge to protect 30% of the Rivershed by 2030. Fraser Riverkeeper (FRK) is a registered Canadian charitable organization dedicated to the protection, conservation, and improvement of the water quality and fish habitat of the Fraser River and its watershed. Our encompassing mission is to help ensure the right of all citizens to safely swim, drink, and fish in BC waters. Located in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, our organization was launched in 2004 under the leadership of renowned environmental advocate and seasoned prosecutor Doug Chapman. FRK is a licensed member of Waterkeeper Alliance -- an international grassroots advocacy organization founded by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. -- and the only Waterkeeper organization in British Columbia. It is also one of nine such programs in Canada and one of nearly 200 worldwide. Working in unison with individuals, businesses, and community groups, FRK has become a community leader and key resource for people who have questions or pollution concerns about our waterways. FRK works with water-based communities to find effective solutions to local pollution problems. Overall, we work with a diverse population, from urban dwellers residing in Vancouver to suburban residents, to local fishermen and families who live and work in the communities of the Fraser Valley. As FRK continues to advocate for clean water and educate the public about the state of their waters, citizens are encouraged and inspired to reclaim their natural and civic heritage of the Fraser River. By stimulating this stronger connection and commitment by the public, FRK is working to re-establish the Fraser River and the salmon it sustains as the biological, economic, and cultural heart of this region.

Just over a week ago, this year’s Fraser River Challenge expedition came to a close — but the campaign continues.

Over the course of the expedition, our women-led swim relay travelled the Fraser from the headwaters toward the Salish Sea, while Justin Smith completed an incredible 1,000-kilometre walk through the Fraser rivershed.

Along the way, we were welcomed by communities, joined by swimmers and paddlers, supported by donors and volunteers, and followed by thousands of people who care deeply about the future of this river.

To everyone who signed the Declaration, donated, shared our stories, came out to meet us, fed us, hosted us, paddled with us, swam with us, or cheered us on from afar: thank you.

Wildfires meant there were roughly 350 kilometres of the Fraser we couldn’t safely swim this year.

So we’re coming back.

Next year, we’ll finish what we started.

In the meantime, the storytelling continues — because the expedition was never just about the swim. It was about helping more people see the Fraser, understand what’s at stake, and join the movement to protect it.

Save the Fraser.

If you haven’t signed the Fraser River Declaration yet, add your name.

The greatest salmon-bearing river needs the greatest chorus of voices demanding its survival.

Goodnight from Deas Island Regional Park and a beauty fiery sunset. Justin Justin Smith has smashed his 1000km Fraser Rivershed walk goal. The swim relay has swum about 1000km of the mighty Fraser River! Tomorrow we have 9.8km to Garry Point Park, against the tide. And then we are done (until next year.

We can’t achieve our goals without the support of a community like you. Sign the declaration for salmon habitat protection on our website. We’re almost at 5000 supporters!
