Canada’s justice system continues to fail Indigenous girls. From underreporting and lack of investigation to systemic discrimination, far too many face violence without accountability. Every girl deserves safety, justice, and a future free from fear.

JFG Board Vice-President Zoë Craig-Sparrow speaks on a panel about Racial Justice and Human Rights addressing attendees of the 194th Period of Sessions of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. She discussed Genocidal discrimination against Indigenous girls and women in Canada and the importance of accessible and effective international human rights mechanisms for advancing justice and human rights of marginalized girls and women in Canada and globally.

Our team submitted evidence to CERD in 2020 outlining how militarized police responses were used against Wet’suwet’en land defenders during the blockade. These actions reflect ongoing human rights violations that Indigenous communities continue to face when protecting their lands, rights, and sovereignty.

After the surveillance operation came to light, when records were unearthed in 2013, land defenders and environmental organizations in B.C. feared they were under constant surveillance and some felt they could no longer safely voice dissent over Northern Gateway.

Protecting land also protects Indigenous girls and future generations, ensuring their right to safety, sovereignty, and a healthy environment where they can thrive.

We will always stand with the Wet’suwet’en Nation and continue pushing for accountability and justice.

Indigenous girls and women are incarcerated at alarmingly high rates across Canada. Their disproportionately high representation in prisons is rooted in systemic failures and injustices borne out of colonialism, racism and s*xism. Their stories are, more often than not, characterized by institutional failures to keep them safe from violence when they were girls. Now imprisoned by the same state institutions that failed them as children: we must do better and protect their fundamental human rights and dignity as survivors. See our report Locking Them Up to Keep Them Safe for more on this issue.

Blaming survivors only protects the people causing harm. Real change starts when we stop asking what she could’ve done differently and start asking why he did it in the first place.

Newly uncovered emails show Jeffrey Epstein claimed Donald Trump spent hours with one of his alleged victims and “knew about the girls.” These revelations, released by the House Oversight Committee, raise serious questions about Trump’s connection to Epstein, despite his public claim that he banned him from Mar-a-Lago for pursuing young women.

Romanticizing true crime killers isn’t harmless entertainment.

It teaches girls unhealthy messages about dating, excuses systemic failures to investigate missing and murdered women, fuels harmful ideas about which victims “deserve” justice, and even contributes to victim blaming.

They say “Justice is for all” until Indigenous girls go missing.

We see you, we stand with you, and we won’t stop fighting until every girl is safe. ✊🏽

Who are we?

We advocate for gender-specific programs that address the unique challenges girls face, including homelessness, poverty, violence, and systemic oppression.

Our goal is to create opportunities that advance equality and support girls on their journey to thrive.

“Hope feels so far away” but Tia Wood is here to remind us not to stay silent in the face of genocide.

Indigenous girls face staggering rates of violence in Canada. Indigenous women and girls are more likely to disappear or be murdered than to get a post secondary education.
