ICYMI: Good policy starts by including the people it affects.

In his article for The Parliamentarian, Praxis’ Dr. Kevin Murphy explores why disability inclusion in politics needs to go beyond consultation, and why lived experience belongs in the rooms where decisions are made.

What started with friends riding for one person has grown into a community moving spinal cord injury research forward.

Shim’s Ride began after Mathew “Shim” Szymanowski sustained a spinal cord injury in 2019. Today, Shim’s Grand Prix brings together riders, volunteers, local businesses, partners, and supporters around a shared purpose.

This year, more than 300 riders and 100 volunteers took part in shimsride, alongside dozens of community partners and hundreds of supporters, with all proceeds supporting Praxis Spinal Cord Institute.

It’s a powerful example of what grassroots support can become when people come together and keep showing up.

Progress in spinal cord injury doesn't happen alone.

On National Nonprofit Day, we're celebrating the organizations and people who work every day to improve life for people living with SCI.

From community organizations and people with lived experience to researchers, clinicians, innovators, funders, and partners, progress happens when different perspectives and expertise come together.

That same spirit is at work across the nonprofit sector, where people come together around shared goals, strengthen communities, and turn good ideas into meaningful action.

At Praxis, we're proud to be part of that larger community—and grateful to everyone helping move important work forward.

We were proud to welcome MP Braedon Clark (Sackville-Bedford-Preston) and the Honourable MP Darren Fisher (Dartmouth-Cole Harbour) to our Canadian National SCI Registry (RHSCIR) site at QEII Nova Scotia Rehab last week to learn about the innovative spinal cord injury (SCI) care and research taking place in Nova Scotia.

During the visit, they met with site leads Dr. Sean Christie, Dr. Sonja McVeigh, Dr. Christine Short, and Alissa Decker, Director of Neurosciences, Orthopedics and Spine, and heard about the collaborative work being done to improve outcomes for people living with SCI.

Highlights included learning about an innovative nerve transfer procedure that can help restore hand and arm function after SCI, and hearing from Dustin Van Buskirk, who shared his lived experience and the positive impact the procedure has had on his recovery.

Through support from Praxis, RHSCIR brings together hospitals across Canada to collect and leverage data that drives research and improvements in SCI care. Visitors learned how data collected at the Halifax site contributes to nationwide research, supports evidence-informed care, and helps answer questions that no single hospital could answer alone.

Thank you to MP Clark and Honourable MP Fisher for taking the time to learn more about the important work being done by clinicians, researchers, and people with lived experience who are helping shape the future of SCI care.

Living well with a spinal cord injury starts with having the right information.

The new Living Well with SCI guide from the Circulus Primary Care Network is designed to help people with SCI better understand their health, prepare for appointments, and take an active role in their care.

The guide includes practical information, planning tools, and everyday health resources to support informed conversations with care teams and help people advocate for their needs.
Praxis is proud to have supported this initiative.

What can we learn when more than 27,000 people across 36 countries share their experiences after spinal cord injury?

A new publication, co-authored by Praxis' Dr. Vanessa Noonan, explores how data from the International Spinal Cord Injury (InSCI) Community Survey can move beyond research to help shape better programs, services, and policies.

By looking at health, daily life, participation, and quality of life together, InSCI is helping build a clearer picture of what matters most to people living with SCI—and how health systems can better respond.
