🌟 Celebrating the 2025 Connect & Prepare: Block Connector Cohort 🌟

WHO is in your emergency preparedness kit?

Earlier this year, a group of neighbours came together to make Kitsilano more connected, caring, and prepared — starting right where they live. The Block Connector Cohort members received a customized Connect and Prepare training to bring their neighbours together and develop shared emergency preparedness plans for their building or block.

Over the course of 6 months, 12 amazing volunteer Block Connectors worked across 7 apartment buildings and city blocks in Kitsilano (and Fairview!) to strengthen neighbour-to-neighbour connections and improve shared emergency preparedness — one hello, one chat, one BBQ, one block party at a time. 400+ residents were reached across 7 apartment buildings and city blocks with over 100 neighbours actively participating through events, info-sharing, and peer-to-peer support. While each project was tailored to the unique context of the block, they all shared the common goal of strengthening social connections and building trust, increasing awareness and local capacity to respond together in times of crisis. There were, predictably, a few challenges: lack of trust, limited engagement, lack of strata/management support, and physical design limitations. Nevertheless, the Good Neighbour Cohort has achieved some remarkable outcomes:

- Strengthened neighbour-to-neighbour connections and trust
- Increased awareness about emergency preparedness through education and resource sharing
- Established neighbour-to-neighbour communication systems (WhatsApp groups, printed contact lists)
- Created practical preparedness tools like HELP/OK window signs, Grab & Go checklists, and a Handbook for Emergencies
- Strengthened collaboration between residents, building management, and community emergency partners

The Good Neighbour Connect & Prepare: Block Connector Cohort demonstrated just what could be possible when neighbours step up to lead community resilience from the ground up - because in an emergency, your first responder is your neighbour!

We extend our deepest gratitude to our community partners, without whom this work would not be possible: Building Resilient Neighbourhoods, Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, and the Tamarack Institute with the generous support of Gore Mutual Foundation.

✨ Meet the 2025 Connect & Prepare Block Connector Cohort! ✨

We just kicked off our first session with this amazing group of neighbours who are stepping up to build stronger, more connected, and more prepared communities—starting right in their apartment buildings or blocks. 🏘️💛

Joined by the incredible facilitator, Ame-Lia Tamburrini from our partner organization, Building Resilient Neighbourhoods, we learnt about the importance of social connectedness for emergency preparedness, shared our visions for a resilient neighbourhood and practical ideas for bringing neighbours together around the common goal. We began planning small but powerful actions to connect with neighbours and prepare together!

We can’t wait to see what this inspiring cohort will do next. Stay tuned for updates of the amazing community-building work ahead! 💬🏘️

Interested in getting involved by connecting with your neighbours and co-creating emergency plan together? We have one spot open to join the cohort!

The Good Neighbour Kitsilano Holiday Cookie Campaign 2024.🏡🎄🍪 The idea was simple: bake cookies and share them with your neighbours! Thank you to all of the 20 amazing volunteers who helped spread Holiday cheer while creating neighbourly connections that will carry on beyond the Holiday season. Thank you to Kitsilano Neighbourhood House for making this project possible!

The Good Neighbour volunteers, aged from 0.5-90 years old, came together with their partners, children, grandchildren, senior parents, and families to bake cookies. From classic chocolate chip and sugar cookies, festive ginger snaps and snickerdoodles, to exquisite matcha pistachio white chocolate, volunteers put a lot of love and care into preparing a festive treat for their neighbours. After carefully packaging the treats and signing cards with a Holiday greeting, they knocked on their neighbours’ doors to deliver Holiday cheer! Needless to say, everyone was pleased to receive such an unexpected surprise. The Good Neighbour volunteers share how a simple kind gesture of connection can create a meaningful impact:

🍪A neighbour I had seen at least half a dozen times and he always had a furrowed brow and looked stressed. When I handed him the cookies, he broke out into a huge grin - it was the first time I had ever seen him smile!

🍪 When I shared the baked goods with one neighbour, she commented how grateful she is to receive homemade treats. Her husband passed away in the fall, and she said these small gestures mean a lot to her.

🍪 An elderly woman shared that she was alone and lonely so we invited her to join us for the Kits House potluck.

🍪 It was a great opportunity to teach my daughter about giving back and how great that can feel too! On a wet winter day, people seemed really cheered to see us and receive a cookie with nothing else in exchange!

🍪 I remember my mom taking me to share treats with our neighbours during Holidays, when I was a kid. It means a lot to continue this tradition with my son.

While the Good Neighbour Holiday Cookies Campaign has come to an end, acts of kindness and connections can happen any time of the year! Discover ideas and resources on how to connect with your neighbours at goodneighbourkitsilano.ca 🏡💕
