Eighty-two years ago this September, approximately 100,000 Estonians fled their homeland as the Soviet forces moved in. They went by sea to Finland and Sweden, and by land primarily to Germany. They left friends, family, and possessions, hoping the tide would turn and that they would be able to return. Unfortunately this did not happen. The Soviet army and regime remained until it finally crumbled in 1991 resulting in the restoration of Estonian independence. (Memorial in Paisu, Estonia commemorating those who left and those who stayed.)
