VLACC is the Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre Society (www.vlacc.ca). We celebrate cultural diversity by sharing Latin American culture with all! We offer the opportunity to learn more about Latin American arts and culture, make new friends, contribute to your community, and have a wonderful time doing it! Most of our programs are presented in English, and admission is often free. Our acti

vities encompass concerts, visual art, author readings and discussions, youth activities, choral singing and more. Our dream of a Latin American Cultural Centre in Vancouver gets closer every day! We are working on building a physical hub for Latin American artists and audiences, to celebrate the increasing importance of the Latin American community in Canada. OUR MISSION
The Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre Society (VLACC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to contribute to the education and cultural legacy of all Canadians by exploring and sharing a deeper understanding of Latin American arts and cultures. Other relevant points:
VLACC is a charitable organization and receives support from the Canadian government in all three levels: municipal, provincial, and federal. VLACC receives Annual Operating Grants from the City of Vancouver and BC Arts. VLACC enjoys the commitment and support of an Honorary Board, composed of representatives of seven Latin American consulates in Vancouver: Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Argentina, and El Salvador

A CLOSER LOOK | CANTO VIVO CONCERT

We are delighted to present Carlos Cortes, Paula Faustino and Marcos Uribe, three of the outstanding musicians of Canto Vivo Choir on stage with TROVADORAS this Sunday, June 7, 2026.

Born and raised in Chile, Carlos Cortes came to Canada in 1982 and became part of a folk group based in Edmonton, Alberta, playing wind and string instruments for three years. He moved to Vancouver in 1987 and served as Artistic Director of the world music ensemble Ancient Cultures, which released eight albums, including the Juno Award-winning El Camino Real (1993). Carlos is a Life Member of the Vancouver Musicians' Association (Local 145). In addition to his musical career, Carlos is a Professional Engineer in British Columbia and Alberta, holds an MSc in Project Management, and earned an RCM diploma in Flute Studies and Music History.

Paula Faustino is a Brazilian drummer and percussionist based in Vancouver, known for bringing a strong sense of Brazilianness to her musical projects. Her work is marked by the richness of Brazilian rhythms, versatility, and a deep connection with diverse Latin American cultures and musical traditions.

Marcos Uribe is a Chilean-Canadian musician and multi-instrumentalist. After studying music in Chile, he formed a Latin American music group in Saskatoon and later toured Scandinavia and the former Soviet Union, where he also contributed to the film The Deal. Back in Canada, he joined the Juno Award-winning ensemble Ancient Cultures and the group Sumalao, recording albums and performing at major festivals including the Vancouver Folk Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, and others.

Together, they will present TROVADORAS: A Celebration of Women Songwriters of Latin America to life in a concert that travels across the continent through songs and rhythms that have shaped generations.

FREE EVENT | READING GROUP SESSION

Join us on June 9, 2026, for an engaging evening of contemporary literature on our Reading Group. This session will explore two compelling stories by acclaimed writer Laia Jufresa: The Cornerist and Back to the Land.

Known for her sharp observations, subtle humour, and emotionally layered storytelling, Jufresa explores themes of memory, belonging, displacement, identity, and human connection through intimate portraits of contemporary life.

Facilitated by Dr. María Ignacia Barraza, this session will create space for conversation, reflection, and exchange in a welcoming environment open to both longtime readers of Latin American literature and those discovering it for the first time.

A closer look at Baltazar Aguilera, the official pianist of Canto Vivo Choir.

Baltazar Aguilera (Salta, Argentina) is a pianist and music educator, and a graduate of the Provincial Conservatory of Music “José Lo Giudice.”

He has worked as a pianist in solo, vocal, and instrumental settings, with a practice grounded in attentive listening and musical sensitivity. Alongside his performance work, he has extensive experience as a music educator, teaching piano to students of various ages and working as a music instructor in schools and socio-educational programs.

Since 2024, he has been based in Vancouver, Canada, where he is actively involved in choir and community projects, continuing his artistic and professional development. In 2025, he joined Canto Vivo as its official pianist.

Join us on June 7, 2026, for TROVADORAS: A Celebration of Women Songwriters of Latin America and experience the artistry of Baltazar Aguilera live on stage. We are thrilled to have Baltazar as part of Canto Vivo Choir.

On June 7, 2026, Canto Vivo Choir invites audiences on a musical journey through the voices of the women songwriters who helped shape Latin American music across generations.

TROVADORAS celebrates composers whose words and melodies continue to resonate deeply through memory, poetry, love, resilience, and cultural connection. The concert travels across more than a century of music and through Latin-American countries.

This week, Latin America also mourns the passing of Totó la Momposina, the legendary Colombian artist whose voice helped bring cumbia musical traditions to audiences around the world. Canto Vivo Choir is proud to honor Totó’s legacy by performing “Yo Me Llamo Cumbia,” the song presented on this video that became popular through her voice.

Join us for an afternoon of music, memory, and connection with Canto Vivo in Concert: TROVADORAS, a celebration of the women songwriters who have defined the musical soul of Latin America.

A closer look at some of the voices behind the Canto Vivo Choir, and we can’t wait for you to experience them live.

We’re pleased to introduce you to Caro Selva and Sheila Minatti.

Caro Selva is a Colombian vocalist and songwriter based in Vancouver. Her music blends Latin American roots with contemporary influences, creating an intimate and introspective sound. Drawing from personal experience, her work invites reflection through a voice-centered and organic approach. She has performed at festivals such as the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival and Latin American Heritage Month.

Sheila Minatti is a singer and vocal artist based in Vancouver, as well as a Voice Instructor at Douglas College. Her work centers on expressive singing and the development of unique vocal identities, bridging technique and artistry. She holds a Ph.D. in Music and has performed internationally, including 18 years with Aprendiz de Maestro at Sala São Paulo. Sheila collaborates with the Vancouver Chamber Choir and performs Brazilian repertoire in duo with pianist Natan Badue, bringing empathy, vitality, and deep audience connection to every performance.

We’re grateful to have both artists as part of Canto Vivo Choir and look forward to Trovadoras concert on June 7, 2026.
