Covenant House Vancouver’s purpose is to serve all youth with relentless support, absolute respect, and unconditional love.

Covenant House Vancouver exists for young people aged 16 - 24 who have fled physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse, those who have been forced from their homes or those who have aged out of foster care.

From walking through the doors of Covenant House Vancouver (CHV) as a young person in need of support to now working on the frontlines as a youth worker, Christine’s journey is one of incredible transformation.

On Monday night, she was recognized with the SPOKEN Changemaker Award, honouring her resilience, healing, and commitment to giving back. As a former CHV youth, Christine now supports other young people with compassion, insight, and lived experience.

June is National Indigenous History Month, in Canada.

Homelessness affects Indigenous Peoples at a massively disproportionate rate compared to other groups, even though they represent only 5% of the Canadian population.

In Greater Vancouver, 34% of homeless individuals identify as Indigenous.

Homelessness among Indigenous Peoples can be traced back to historical trauma, oppression, racism, and discrimination, as a result of colonization.

CHV works with Indigenous youth to overcome these adversities so that they can realize their full potential.

The inclusivity of our programs and services provides a safe environment where these youth are respected, seen, heard, and valued. We also provide Indigenous-specific supports to meet the needs of this community.

We:
· Served 149 Indigenous youth across all programs
· Supported 24 Indigenous youth in our Crisis Program
· Provided support, through our Drop-In Centre and Outreach services, for the 24% of the youth population who identified as Indigenous

2SLGBTQIA+ youth are overrepresented in the homeless population. In Canada, that’s 25%–40% of youth experiencing homelessness.

At CHV, 35% of the youth we serve identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.

Family rejection is the most common cause of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth homelessness.

We strive to be a safe and inclusive space, for all youth.

Some of the ways we do this are through:
• Mental health care and community-specific art therapy
• An active partnership with Qmunity
• Participation in Vancouver Pride and the D**e March
• 2SLGBTQIA+ specific nights in our Drop-In Centre

We are committed to fostering welcoming and respectful spaces for all individuals and communities, and we engage in meaningful practices that empower young people on their journey to a brighter future.

Our donors show how we take care of each other.

To us and the young people we support, they’re heroes.

Andrew is one of those heroes.

A former foster child who moved from home to home, he eventually found his forever family. That experience shaped him — and inspired him to give back.

For Andrew, being a supporter began with Toonies for Teens, where he collected spare change in a Pringles can, to support youth at Covenant House Vancouver, who were going down a path who were going down a similar path to him.

Andrew understands how much it matters to youth to have people who believe in them, listen to their stories, and see mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failure.

Andrew’s story shows how one small act of generosity can grow into something extraordinary.
