URGENT CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!

Damayan BC urgently seeks volunteers to assist 15+ migrant workers who were victims of human trafficking and immigration fraud.

We are looking for volunteers that can support with:
• Case Work — support in filing 15+ status applications within the month. No prior experience necessary (training will be provided), however lawyers and paralegals with experience in immigration law are definitely encouraged to join our team.
• Housing — we need housing for 15 vulnerable migrant workers for 2+ weeks starting October 15. If you have an extra room, couch, bed and are willing to host, financial support for additional rent and groceries can be provided.
• Translation — seeking translators/interpreters for Tagalog, Ilonggo, and Bisaya urgently. If you have other languages in your back pocket (Hindi, Punjabi), that is also very welcome!
• Driving — to get workers to appointments. Gas will be reimbursed.
• Legal — we are urgently seeking to expand our network of pro-bono and low-bono lawyers specializing in immigration law, labour law, etc. This may include providing summary advice, reviewing IRCC applications, notarizing affidavits, or retention for ongoing support in complex cases.

Damayan BC invites you to join us for a free case intake training this coming *Thursday August 13th at 6:30PM*, to give folks the practical tools to support with case intake for precarious migrants. 1 million permits will be expiring this year and 30,000 refugee claimants have already received letters that they may no longer be eligible for asylum — we are seeking volunteers to support with case intake, education, policy adovacy, and quick response teams for the immigration enforcement that will soon mirror our neighbors down south.

ICYMI: Damayan BC held its Annual General Assembly on July 12 at Trout Lake Community . Over 30 members, clients, and allies gathered to celebrate Damayan BC's work over the past year and collaborate on migrant resource network planning.

After lunch, we reflected on Damayan BC's activities from 2025 to 2026, including: support for community events with partner organizations; becoming an affiliate member of the International Migrants Alliance Canada; logo redesign and ongoing website development; public and ongoing case intake training; connecting 4 migrants in precarious situations to pro bono lawyers and community resources; and starting a resource guide for wraparound support for undocumented and precarious workers.

Next, we delivered a primer on Bill C-12, based on analysis from the International Migrants Alliance Canada All Members Meeting in June 2026. Bill C-12, the "Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act", became law in March 2026 and affects all migrants and immigrants in the country. The bill (a) poses a significant threat to the rights and safety of migrants and refugees, (b) expands the state's power to cancel immigration documents and block legitimate refugee claims arbitrarily, and (c) worsens the risks of detention, deportation, and family separation.

To illustrate these impacts, we screened a short documentary by Education4All, a campaign by AWARE: Alberta Workers Association for Research and Education. "Canada's Invisible Children" tells the stories of children in Alberta who have been denied access to school due to their family’s precarious immigration status, even before the passage of Bill C-12.

Afterwards, we mapped assets and gaps in migrant resources across the Lower Mainland. Our program ended with a cultural performance from members of Migrante BC.

We registered 8 new volunteers from the AGM, and we're always on the lookout for more people to join. Our focus areas include case intake, project support, education and training, research and advocacy, and communications. Training is provided and time commitments are flexible. Join us for the 2026 Damayan BC Annual General Assembly!

We are thrilled to invite all members, clients, and allies to our upcoming general assembly on Sunday, July 12th 1-4 PM at the Trout Lake Community Centre Lakewood Room. This annual gathering invites the community to celebrate the work Damayan BC has done over the last year, strengthen our relationships with each other, and prepare for our continued work to serve and empower migrant workers in BC!

More than 1 million permits will be expiring this year and 30,000 refugee claimants have already received letters that they may no longer be eligible for asylum. While wait times for permits and applications stall and settlement services face budget cuts, the Canadian government has pledged $617 million in their 5-year border plan, with targets to recruit 1000 more CBSA agents within the next year. In light of the recent passing of Bill C-12 into law, we are seeking volunteers to support with case intake, education, policy adovacy, and quick response teams for the immigration enforcement that will soon mirror our neighbors down south.
