Canada’s assisted-death law is unconstitutional and exposing people with coexisting physical and mental illness to “heightened risks of premature death” facilitated by the state, according to a wrongful death claim filed by the family of a 52-year-old man who was euthanized in a Vancouver clinic while out on a day pass from a hospital psychiatric ward.

It is the latest case involving a family challenging the lawfulness of an assisted death provision in Canada. Among those named is Dr. Ellen Wiebe, one of Canada’s most prolific providers of medically assisted death who has administered life-ending drugs to more than 400 people. Credit:

Grateful for the unwavering dedication of our advocacy community. Our voices have been heard, and the government is set to postpone the expansion of Maid to include people with mental illness alone.

Recognizing the insights of professionals and witnesses, they acknowledge that our healthcare system isn’t prepared.

When we heard the news today, I cried tears of joy, knowing that so many vulnerable people will be protected. But this is just the beginning of our wake up call. The MAiD regime is a symptom of our broken healthcare system.

This week, MP Ed Fast, is presenting Bill C-314 to the House of Commons. If passed, this bill will undoubtedly be the most important piece of legislation to protect vulnerable people with mental illness from receiving medical assistance in dying (MAiD).

This is not a political issue, it’s a human rights issue. Every conservative MP is in support of this bill but we need your help. If you live in a non-conservative writing, please send a quick email to your MP to let them know that you want them to support Bill C-314.

I hope that you can make it to this informative event on a very important issue. We will discuss the importance of eliminating mental illness from MAiD (Medial Assistance In Dying). A Vancouver woman says she’s deeply disturbed to have visited the Vancouver General Hospital in the midst of a mental health crisis, only to have a clinician suggest medical assistance in dying (MAID).
Kathrin Mentler, who has chronic depression and suicidality, visited the hospital’s Access and Assessment Centre on June 2, months after a “traumatic event” contributed to her distress. That day, she said she felt she couldn’t keep herself “safe at home” and didn’t have “the necessary supports.”

During her assessment, Mentler said the clinician was friendly, offered to call a psychiatrist, and confirmed there was a good chance Mentler would be allowed to stay overnight.

Then, Mentler said the staffer warned there weren’t enough beds because the system was “completely overwhelmed,” and “out of nowhere,” asked the question: “Have you considered MAID?”
“It really took me by surprise,” the 37-year-old told Global News. “It just didn’t sit right to me and I think it’s an important conversation to have.” (Continued in comments)
