๐จ๐ฆ BIG NEWS: Canada Fixes Citizenship Rules for Children Born Abroad
Canada has officially changed its citizenship rules โ and this is huge news for many families living outside Canada.
As of December 15, 2025, the government has removed the old โfirst-generation limitโ that stopped many Canadians from passing citizenship to their children born or adopted abroad.
What does this mean in simple words?
โ
If you were born or adopted outside Canada and your parent was a Canadian citizen, you may now be a Canadian citizen, even if you were previously refused under old rules.
โ
Many people who were unfairly excluded before (often called โLost Canadiansโ) can now apply for Proof of Canadian Citizenship.
What about children born in the future?
For children born or adopted abroad on or after Dec 15, 2025:
โข Citizenship can still pass on if the Canadian parent lived in Canada for at least 3 years before the childโs birth or adoption.
This ensures a real connection to Canada while keeping families together โค๏ธ
Why this matters
This change recognizes modern families, global careers, and Canadians living abroad โ and fixes a law that courts found unfair.
๐ If you or your child were affected by the old rules, this change could apply to you.
