Meet Mia-yaltwa Ha’lidzogm hoon (Me-ah-yall-twa Ha-lee-joh-gom hOH-own), Realm of the Salmon, Home of the Salmon 🐟🐋🪸

6,700 square kilometers of ancient coral and sponge reefs, kelp forests and eelgrass beds that are vital to salmon, herring, eulachon, whales—and local communities.

Now jointly protected as:
✨ A National Marine Conservation Area Reserve by Parks Canada
✨ An Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area by Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xai’Xais, Nuxalk, Wuikinuxv, Gitxaała and Gitga’at Nations

Rooted in Indigenous laws and local customs, this protected area is a commitment by First Nations, BC and Canada 🤝 with local communities, fishers, scientists, tourism operators and other ocean users to protect ecosystem health, rebuild abundance, and support coastal economies and community-based fisheries.

Next up: shaping a stewardship plan together to guide how the Realm of the Salmon, Home of the Salmon is cared for 🌊

Who knew that cats, birds, and the future of protected areas in BC had anything in common?

Lyse Deselliers did. A retired wildlife veterinarian, professional painter, and one of our incredible Artvocacy participants, Lyse turned a passionate conversation about her backyard into a published op-ed in Castanet — timed perfectly to World Migratory Bird Day.

Because it turns out that keeping your cat indoors, advocating for a municipal bylaw, and pushing the federal government to finalize the South Okanagan-Similkameen National Park Reserve are part of the same story. The Okanagan is home to hundreds of species at risk and every layer of protection matters.

This is what .vocacy looks like in action. 🐦🌿

Our young leaders have arrived in Victoria 🌿

Yesterday, 20 youth from across BC have come together as part of the Young Leaders in Conservation Program to meet with provincial leaders to speak about something that matters deeply to them: protecting nature.

Through this program, these youth have explored Indigenous-led stewardship, conservation, and how to advocate for a sustainable future. Now, they’re putting those skills into action! 💪

They’re calling on the provincial government to prioritize nature and biodiversity in the decisions shaping our future.

Stay tuned as we continue to bring youth voices from across BC to decision-making tables.

A bear with a good memory, 20,000 calories to find before winter, and your orchard in its path? That's not aggression. That's biology! 🐻

In the late summer and fall, bears enter hyperphagia: a pre-hibernation eating phase where every single calorie counts. And grizzlies and black bears don't even respond to threats the same way — their evolutionary histories shaped completely different defence strategies.

The more we understand bear behaviour, the better we can share space with them. 🐾

Water, land, art, and community... the Okanagan delivered all of it in one trip!

I attended the Okanagan Nation Alliance's Water & Climate Forum, visited the NTAMTQEN Community Garden in Lower Similkameen Indian Band territory, got pulled into a parade at Ignite the Arts, watched incredible artists bring Penticton to life, and spent time with some inspiring creatives... the Artvocacy participants 🌿🎨

Shoutout to & so many others for the music. To Tristan and the for everything. for the heart-opening water & climate forum, and to the land itself. There is nowhere quite like the Okanagan.

Why are bears in the news? Bears aren’t suddenly “more aggressive.” They’re hungry, their habitat is shrinking, and more people than ever are moving into spaces that have always been theirs.

Last summer, some regions saw salmon returns drop by over 90%. Add human encroachment into the picture… more homes, farms, and recreation in grizzly territory… and you start to understand what bears are actually navigating.

Understanding bears is the first step to coexisting with them. 🐻
