Right To Quiet

Right To Quiet Welcome to peace and quiet. We do not seek a silent world.

The Right to Quiet Society for Soundscape Awareness and Protection was founded in Vancouver, BC in 1982 as a charitable organization with the mission of raising public awareness of the detrimental effects of noise on health. We want a world where quiet is normal, a readily available part of life, so we can all hear nature again!

Wednesday is International Noise Awareness Day, and we're marking it by celebrating what we gain when we reduce harmful noise: the chance to hear what matters.

Studies show that natural sounds like birdsong, flowing water, and wind through trees can lower stress, reduce blood pressure, and improve cognitive performance.

Join friends around the world for one minute of silence at 11 a.m. your local time.

Celebrate the 31st Annual International Noise Awareness Day!

On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, let's come together to shine a spotlight on the impact of noise on hearing, health, and quality of life—and to celebrate the power of awareness to create change.

Now in its 31st year, International Noise Awareness Day (INAD) is a global call to protect hearing, reduce harmful noise, and promote healthier, more mindful sound environments in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.

Whether you take a moment to turn down the volume, learn more about hearing health, or share the message with others, every action helps move us toward a quieter, healthier world.

Celebrate with us—and help make noise awareness heard.

You are greatly missed. 🥰

On what would have been her 90th birthday, Quiet Communities honors Dr. Arline Bronzaft’s profound contributions to our understanding of noise and its impacts on health, learning, and child development. A true friend to our organization, she served as Honorary Chair of our Quiet American Skies program and as a frequent blog contributor — bringing her authoritative voice and thoughtfulness to our work and to the many individuals who reached out for guidance with noise issues.

In this photograph shared by her daughter Susan, Arline sits on a bench dedicated to her for helping prevent Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, where she once lived, from becoming a major expressway. Her advocacy kept the neighborhood quiet, preserving paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The inscription on the bench reads: "People can now sit because you took a stand."

Happy Birthday, Arline! We miss you.

Our University of Toronto student will share her research on how noise affects wildlife around us, especially in urban environments 🐦🌆. She’ll explain how everyday sounds like traffic can disrupt animal communication, behavior, and even survival 🔊.

We’ll also connect this work to environmental policy by discussing how noise is regulated, why it’s often overlooked, and why it should be treated as an environmental issue — not just a human inconvenience.

The goal is to show how reducing noise can help protect biodiversity and improve the environment we all share.

At what point does a noisy neighbour or constant delivery trucks stop being a minor annoyance and become a serious source of distress?

That’s the central question behind The Quietest Year, a documentary that begins as one person’s attempt to address local noise pollution, and unfolds into a powerful exploration of how noise impacts public health and the environment.

The film features QPI, highlighting the importance of protecting quiet places and rethinking how sound shapes our lives.

Experts link chronic noise exposure to heart disease, anxiety, sleep disruption, and even childhood hearing loss. Silence isn’t just peaceful, it’s essential.

The film premieres on Vermont Public on Thursday, 6 February at 8 PM, launching the 21st season of the Made Here series.
