AFC Flag Expedition Program:
Launched in 2005, this program facilitates the field study and artistic rendering of endangered species or habitats deserving of greater public attention. AFC artist members can apply for fellowship grants to explore and document one of the world’s remaining true wildernesses and to observe and portray the rare and endangered species that live in those places. AFC Website:
The AFC website features several thousand original and limited edition nature artworks with over 5,000 original paintings and over 500 original sculptures. It is the largest and most visited site of its kind, receiving up to half a million hits per month. Art for Conservation Program:
This online program provides artists with a platform to gain exposure for their artwork and allows them to earmark a percentage of any work they sell for a conservation organization of their choice. The program has over 100 conservation beneficiaries with Artists’ commitments worth over $13 million US. In addition, AFC holds an annual juried art exhibit live and virtual, and facilitates the AFC Conservation Artist of the Month Award and the Simon Combes Conservation Artist Award. Artwork of the Day - "Clear Water" - Acrylic by Joie Paré.

Artist Statement: "I wanted to push my boundaries when I chose to paint this. I wanted to paint water that was both reflective and transparent so you could see the stones and fish underneath. The reflection on the water surface fading into the transparent area, the colour difference when the stones are wet or dry, the shine on the stones and on the meniscus of the water against the stones were all fun challenges. I really wanted to paint a lot of detail in this painting. There are a couple of trout fry, a dragonfly, a couple of birds flying and a Hellgrammite! "

Artwork of the Day - "Moonlight owl" - Graphite/pencil by Mike Hughes.

Artist Statement: "Although a common species in the UK, Tawny owls are often heard more than they are seen. I have always enjoyed the fact that nature can be nearby but still out of sight. My pencil study shows an owl hidden in an old oak tree, with small patches of moonlight catching the edge of its feathers and the texture of the bark. I used a range of pencils to get a high contrast between the shadows and highlights."

Artwork of the Day - "Tidal Pools" - Acrylic by Luke Raffin.

Artist Statement: "This painting was inspired by watching a group of crows socializing in front of my cabin. Crows have the largest brain to body ratio of any bird species, which makes them among the most fascinating and intelligent birds in the world. Known for their sleek black feathers and haunting calls, they have long been associated with mystery, folklore, and symbolism. Crows exhibit remarkable behaviors, they are innovators, problem solvers, and social creatures with a complexity that rivals some primates. "

Artwork of the Day - "Barn Owl's Intense Gaze" - Hand-made Japanese washi (paper) using soutia bluish black ink made using genuine indigo by Roslyn Levin.

Artist Statement: "This piece is painted on hand-made Japanese washi (paper) using soutia bluish black ink made using genuine indigo which takes months to make by hand. I used the same brush for the entire painting. It also was handmade, in this case from wolf hair. I enjoy painting owls and particularly barn owls or snowy owls due to their distinct markings Owls are predators. This owl has seen something that has definitely caught it's interest I felt it move from it's perch upon the stump to is current position - practically hanging off the stump. The intensity of it's gaze is palatable. You look into it's eyes and know that decisions are being made that will be acted upon in short order. I feel the tension in the moment of decision What does it see or hear that has it so very interested? You have become part of this story. Looking into those eyes is like looking into the depths of it's soul. At this moment, expect the unexpected. The meaning of the signature stamp I carved and used on this painting, 'soul'. "

Artwork of the Day - "Goose Banding" - Oil by Colin Starkevich.

Artist Statement:
"Leg bands are often placed on birds that provide valuable data for a variety of different conservation research. In the Canadian Sub-arctic, the artist was fortunate to assist with research projects involving Canadian Geese by assisting a research crew with their banding study. A helicopter is used to traverse this vast landscape. Once the geese are found the helicopter lands and the crew heads out to round up a group of geese which are walked into a pen system that is set up involving two pens. The geese are walked into the pens as this happens in summer when they are moulting and are flightless due to lack of flight feathers.

In this painting the person in the pen on the left is capturing geese and handing them over to the people sitting in the pen on the right. These people are placing leg bands on the birds while sexing and aging (adult or gosling) them. The person standing is handing out leg bands from the racks leaning on the “banding box”. The person sitting on the far right with the face/dust mask on is recording data that is associated with each band (each band has a unique number). Once the geese are banded they are released into the pen on the right. After all geese in the group are banded and in the pen on the right, they get released back into the wild as a group. Sometimes geese find openings in the mesh netting of the pen and escape such as the one making a run for it in the foreground of this painting! Working in this remote region involves many risks, some involve wildlife such as Polar bears. While working in this region a gun is required to be with the crew at all times for protection. In this painting the research crew is oblivious to an unwelcome guest arriving…

This is a contrived scene and the artist never experienced immediate danger such as this. Although a scene like this can play out in reality, it likely will not happen as research crews are very experienced and aware of their surroundings and danger long before they head into the field. This painting was created to portray a unique aspect of conservation and some of the real risks involved when working in remote areas. "

Artwork of the Day - "Master Recycler" - Watercolor by Mia Bosna.

Artist Statement: "The American burying beetle is the largest carrion beetle in North America. It is a "master recycler" due to its unique role in burying and consuming dead animals, which helps return nutrients to the ecosystem and controls fly and ant populations. They are considered an important indicator species, with their presence or absence reflecting the health of the surrounding ecosystem."
