A big shout out of appreciation to Wally Kerchum of North Shore Rescue who told a capacity crowd in the Dunbar area about how to stay safe when hiking in our local wilderness.

It was fascinating to learn about the extraordinary efforts these highly trained volunteers make to search for and rescue hikers who are lost or injured. We are so fortunate to have these amazing volunteers who devote so much of their time and energy to carrying out these searches.

When was the last time you checked your emergency kit or grab-and-go bag?

A good rule of thumb is to review and restock your emergency supplies twice a year. Replace expired food, water, medications and batteries, update important documents, and make sure clothing and personal items still meet your household's needs.

Taking a few minutes now can help ensure your supplies are ready when you need them most.

Good advice about the amount of water you should have in your emergency kit to last at least several days. It's more than most people realize they will need!

Do you have enough water in your emergency kit? 💧

Few things are more important for your health than having water that is safe for drinking, food preparation and hygiene.

Store at least 4 litres of water per person, per day, and don’t forget additional water for pets and anyone with specific medical needs.

It is best to purchase bottled water for your emergency kit. However, it is also important to know how to safely purify water if you are in a place where bottled water is not available.

Come learn trail and wilderness safety tips from Wally Kerchum, who has extensive experience with a wide range of rescues from over 25 years of volunteer service with North Shore Rescue. He will outline the steps you and your family can take to stay safe when exploring local trails and wilderness. Preparation isn’t about guaranteeing nothing will go wrong. It’s about being ready when something does.

Wally will also describe current rescue techniques using satellite communications, helicopters, search and rescue technology and advanced medical practitioners.

A radio is an important communication tool in an emergency, when cell phones and internet access are down.
PreparedBC Burnaby USAR Metro Vancouver

“Why do I need a radio when I have a phone?” 📻

Your phone is an important emergency tool, but it relies on having access to cell networks or the Internet – services that may be disrupted in some emergencies.

A battery-powered or hand-crank radio can help you receive emergency information and updates when Internet, TV and cell services aren’t available.

That's why a radio belongs in both your emergency kit and grab-and-go bag.

Have you designated your out-of-area contact for yourself and your family?

Survive-It Disaster Preparedness PreparedBC

When you think about emergency preparedness, what comes to mind? Food? Water? Grab-and-go kits?

Those are important - but after spending 47 days working in a Reception Centre this summer, I was reminded that there’s another really important part of preparedness:

People.

If you had to evacuate tomorrow, who would you call? Do you have someone outside your community who could be your family's point of contact if local communications were disrupted? And is there someone who would be counting on you?

These are simple conversations, but they can make a huge difference when something goes wrong.

My challenge for you today: choose an out-of-area contact and make sure everyone in your household knows who it is and how to reach them.

Because preparedness isn't only about what you have.

It's also about who you have.

People ask me why I love being on stage. Here’s the honest answer.

It’s not about speaking. It’s not about being in front of a crowd.

It’s about the moment someone in the room realizes they’ve been operating on assumptions that could put their family at risk, and they leave with something practical they can actually use.

I am seeing firsthand this summer what happens when people are unprepared. Real situations. Real families. Real consequences where many could have been avoided with simple planning.

That’s why I can’t stop talking about it.

If sharing what I’ve learned helps even one person avoid that kind of moment, it’s worth it every time.
