Every choice carries a cost — but not every cost appears on a price tag.

In our latest ScholarSpeak session, we were honoured to welcome Dr. Stephanie Villers, Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Waterloo, for an insightful conversation on overcoming barriers to sustainable consumption.

Together, we explored how sustainable choices are shaped not only by individual values, but also by affordability, accessibility, information, incentives, and the systems around us.

Sustainable consumption is not only about what we buy. It is about the systems we navigate, the barriers we face, and the trade-offs societies must understand.

Thank you to Dr. Villers for sharing her research and perspectives, and to all participants who continue to bring curiosity, reflection, and action to conversations that shape our shared future.

Today, we celebrate the people, cultural heritage, and communities of Nunavut.

GLOCAL youth leaders across Nunavut are marking this special day by giving back to their communities:

📍 Iqaluit
Our GLOCAL colleagues supported Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated’s Nunavut Day celebration, helping with event activities and welcoming community members.

📍 Arctic Bay
Our colleagues supported the local celebration and will continue their service through an environmental clean-up initiative, helping keep their beautiful community clean.

From Iqaluit to Arctic Bay — and across Nunavut — we are inspired by the energy, kindness, and leadership of young people who step forward to serve their communities.

A big thank you to our youth team members, local partners, and community leaders who make these opportunities possible.

Today, members of GLOCAL’s Iqaluit team spent an afternoon cleaning up the area around their local high school, collecting litter and helping make the space cleaner and more welcoming for students and community members.

The initiative was inspired by (IQ) values, including the shared responsibility to care for the land and environment that sustains us. Environmental stewardship is not only about protecting nature—it is also about showing respect for our community and people.

We are proud of these young leaders for turning values into action and demonstrating that meaningful can begin with something as simple as giving a few hours to improve the place we call home.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make a visible difference in the community. Every bag of litter collected represents a small act of care that contributes to a stronger, healthier, and more connected Iqaluit.

We were honoured to welcome Senator Nancy Karetak-Lindell to GLOCAL's Nunavut Regional Showcase 2026 this past weekend in Iqaluit.

Her involvement extended well beyond delivering remarks. She spent time with young people, to their experiences, sharing stories from her own , and engaging in thoughtful conversations about , , and .

Drawing on her own experiences, Senator Karetak-Lindell spoke about how her path into public life began with a desire to strengthen her community. She encouraged youth to recognize that meaningful leadership often starts with small acts of service and a commitment to helping others.

She emphasized that we cannot always wait for someone else to solve the challenges our communities face. Lasting change comes from people who are willing to step forward, volunteer, and support those around them. Every contribution helps build stronger, more resilient communities.

For youth, having the opportunity to connect with a leader who takes the time to listen and learn alongside them is about more than representation. It sends a powerful message that their ideas, experiences, and contributions are valued, and that the work they are already doing in their communities is an important form of leadership.

Senator Karetak-Lindell's message also reflected the importance of intergenerational leadership. Across Nunavut, young people, Elders, educators, families, and community leaders are all shaping stronger communities together.
Leadership is not something that belongs to one generation before being handed to the next, but exists across generations, all at once.

Throughout the Showcase, we saw that spirit reflected in youth-led initiatives supporting cultural learning, food security, environmental stewardship, storytelling, volunteering, land-based education, and everyday acts of care and service.

Young people are not simply preparing to become leaders. They are already making meaningful contributions to their communities today. Our shared responsibility is to continue creating opportunities, opening doors, and ensuring that their voices are heard and their efforts are supported.

Thank you, Senator Nancy Karetak-Lindell and Shirley Dagg for joining us, for spending the day with Nunavut youth, and for reinforcing a message that resonated throughout the Showcase: strong communities are built when people invest in one another, and young people have an essential role to play in shaping that future.

We were honoured to welcome MP Lori Idlout to GLOCAL's Nunavut Regional Showcase 2026 this past weekend in Iqaluit.

Her participation went far beyond delivering remarks. She spent time with young people, to their experiences, sharing her own , and engaging in meaningful conversation about , , and .

For , being seen and heard by public leaders is more than symbolic. It reinforces an important truth: your ideas matter, your voice , and the work you are doing in your community is already a form of leadership.

Drawing on the guidance she received from Elders and teachers, MP Idlout spoke about the importance of , public service, and the shared all carry in strengthening community life. One message resonated throughout the day: leadership is not passed from one generation to the next in a straight line, but exists across generations, all at once.

Youth lead. Elders guide. Teachers support. Communities create space. Public leaders listen. Together, these relationships help build confidence, belonging, and the conditions for future generations to thrive.

Throughout the Showcase, we witnessed youth leadership already flourishing across Nunavut: in school greenhouses, cultural learning initiatives, food security projects, environmental stewardship, storytelling, volunteering, land-based learning, and everyday acts of care and service.

Young people are not simply the leaders of tomorrow. They are already building, creating, serving, and strengthening their communities today. Our collective responsibility is to widen the pathways for participation, open more doors, and ensure that more young people are seen, heard, valued, and supported.

Across Nunavut, youth leadership is grounded in culture, community, connection to the land, and lived experience.

On June 6, 2026, GLOCAL Foundation of Canada hosted the GLOCAL ᓄᓇᕗᑦ Nunavut Regional Showcase 2026: Celebrating Youth-Led Civic Initiatives in Iqaluit, bringing together youth, Elders, educators, legislators, and community members from across the territory.

The showcase highlighted the many ways young people across are strengthening participation, expression, and well-being, while recognizing that is always happening across generations, simultaneously and in relation to one another. More than a single event, it reflected sustained relationship-building, mutual learning, and a shared commitment to supporting -led work already rooted in communities.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to making the day meaningful, including Senator Nancy Karetak-Lindell, MP Lori Idlout, Shirley Dagg, Toby Otak of CBC North, Saila Ipirq-Procyk, Adrian Baker of Smartice Monitoring and Information Inc., Calvin Pedersen of Nunavut Emergency Management, Mariam Imak of the Government of Nunavut, Bonnie Tsang, and of course, all the youth and school communities whose leadership anchored the showcase: Inuksuk High School, Aqsarniit Ilinniarvik School, Arviligruaq Ilinniarvik School, and Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik School.

At its core, the showcase reaffirmed a shared principle: youth leadership in Nunavut is already present and already strong. The role of national organizations is to listen first, build relationships, and support the conditions that allow that leadership to continue to grow.

Celebrate the incredible work of youth, community leaders, Elders, and local organizations from across Nunavut at a day dedicated to learning, culture, leadership, and community impact.

🎨🧁 Calling all crafters, artists, bakers, and community members in Iqaluit!

Join us for the Youth Craft Sale on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM at the Franco Centre (Building 981, Nunavut Drive, Iqaluit, NU X0A 0A1).

Come support talented local youth as they showcase and sell handmade crafts, artwork, baked goods, jewelry, textiles, and more. Admission is free, and all proceeds go directly back to the youth vendors.

🌟 Youth ages 12–30 are invited to participate as vendors.

Innovation grows when youth are given the right opportunities.

Through the CANConnect Micro-Grant, Aditya Lumb, founder of LabPath, hosted a two-day research hackathon at the University of Toronto Mississauga, engaging 300 students in hands-on research and innovation.

From developing research ideas to being published in an undergraduate journal, participants gained real-world experience and confidence as emerging researchers.

At GLOCAL, we are proud to support youth-led initiatives that create meaningful impact in communities across Canada. 💙

Through the Dancing for Nunavut project, the Indigenous Dance Foundation is empowering youth with opportunities to explore movement, build confidence, and express themselves through dance.

From weekly programming to diverse dance styles and creative activities, this initiative is creating safe, engaging spaces for youth—especially in communities with limited access to such opportunities.
