This morning we were so pleased to share the spectacular dawn chorus with so many friends!
Highlights were a Common Raven nest, Green Heron flyover, Field Sparrow, Black-throated Green Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Nashville Warbler, and more black-capped chickadees than we could count.
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day in Uxbridge with us 💚

We are excited to be at the community table for opening day!
Come say hi on Sunday May 3rd between 9am and 2pm.
We will have all kinds of information about Bird Friendly Cities program and what you can do locally to make our community more sustainable, climate resilient and biodiverse! Birds are an indicator species of overall ecosystem health, and their decline signals the need for urgent conservation action. We are all a part of the same ecosystem, so let’s protect it and balance development and economic growth with the health of our environment 💚

🌧️ The rain didn’t stop us today from sharing bird knowledge and empowering the next generation to help reverse population loss by treating windows to make them safer for birds! We had a great time at the outdoor education Watershed Festival.

Together with partners and we talked about three early migrants that pass through Durham Region that are also particularly susceptible to window collisions: the White-throated Sparrow, Golden-crowned Kinglet and American Woodcock. We shared information on when and where to look for these birds, their range in Ontario, some interesting facts about their life history and how they are impacted by fatal window collisions in the GTA.

If you want to treat windows as a community project with young people, we’re here to help, just send us a DM!

🗓️ May 9th is World Migratory Bird Day in Uxbridge! Come out and celebrate with
This year’s theme is ‘Every bird counts— your observations matter!’ raising awareness of how you can contribute to community science and how that data is used to shape policy.

The festivities will begin at 6am for a Dawn Chorus in Countryside Preserve with North Durham Nature. Please register through northdurhamnature.com (🔗 in our bio).

This is a seated listening event so bring chairs/blankets and dress in layers. Then we will head to for drinks, snacks and conversation at 9 am. There will of course be coffee to sample ☕️

Whether you’re curious about how to get involved in community science or you just want to see the newly arrived migrants, come join us!

Brown Thrashers are a great bird that breeds here in Uxbridge each spring and they are starting to arrive back from migration. Unfortunately this one’s journey was cut short by a fatal collision with a window. We lose far too many migratory birds each year to collisions with glass. It is not an isolated one-off problem, it is widespread and the annual fatalities add up to have a terrible impact on populations. This is a problem with a solution though! We can treat glass to make it visible to birds and we can turn off non-essential lighting at night. Please do your part to help protect migrating birds this spring!
