Social Opportunities and Rec Society of Nova Scotia (SOARS) will provide day programming and services to young adult’s ages 16-35 living with intellectual and physical challenges. The organization will be certified as a not for profit social enterprise. We are dedicated in helping those with varied intellectual and physical challenges live their life to the fullest, while practicing the “people first” philosophy, which creates a better tomorrow for our communities. We strive to offer a community that promotes self-respect, inclusion for all, diversity, independence and improves the quality of life for all its members. We intend to offer the highest quality of day programming and services for young adult ages 16-35. We will also be providing programming for youth ages 5-16 through our Camps Program, Junior Leadership and the Saturday Clubhouse. The day program operation hours will be 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Our present facility will adequately accommodate 35 participants. We will employ a highly trained staff team who will support program participants in the role of “coaches”. In addition, the day program will offer a variety of activities, life, pre-vocational and vocational skills training to foster the growth of each individual as we support them in the journey towards community integration and self-independence. The facility is 4896 square feet and will adequately provide the opportunity for interaction between staff, volunteers, and program participants. The program’s infrastructure will allow for the program flexibility for individualized care. We will listen to needs and aspirations of each participant while providing a safe, nurturing environment. Presently there are long waiting periods for a person with special needs to gain meaningful employment at other service providers. Our goal is to meet the social, physical, mental, recreational, educational and vocational needs of each participant. SOARS is committed to fostering compassion and improving the lives of participants in their pursuit of his or her self-identified true potential.
