Hope in Átl'ḵa7tsem Howe Sound

What happens when young adults are given the opportunity to connect with the land, water and each other? 🌿🌊

This September, Camp Fircom welcomed a wonderful group of young adults, ages 18–30, for Hope in Átl'ḵa7tsem Howe Sound, a weekend of canoeing, storytelling, cultural learning, gardening, hands-on action, creativity, campfires and community.

From learning about the Howe Sound Recovery Story and native plants to getting our hands dirty removing invasive species, the weekend was full of opportunities to learn, contribute and simply enjoy being together.

On September 30, we honour the history and lasting impacts of residential schools and remember the children, survivors, their families, and their communities. This day reinforces the ongoing need for reconciliation and the importance of strengthening relationships between Indigenous and non‑Indigenous communities.

Camp Fircom would like to acknowledge that this camp, located on Chá7elkwnech (Gambier Island), is within the unceded, ancestral territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.

We remain committed to learning, listening, sharing, and taking meaningful steps toward reconciliation. May this day deepen our understanding and strengthen our responsibility to walk alongside Knowledge Keepers and Elders from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation in an authentic relationship built on respect, humility, and action.

A summer of retreats at Camp Fircom 🌲

This summer, Neerava led three very different retreats at Camp Fircom, each with its own unique focus, rhythm and group of participants.

🌿 From the Silence, an adult meditation retreat centred on stillness, awareness and connection with nature.

💙 Alumni Moms Camp, a joyful weekend of swimming, kayaking, painting, archery, reflection, laughter and reconnecting with a beloved place.

🌊 From the Deep, a retreat for women offering a deeper exploration through the Dalian Method™ and the power of authentic community.

Three very different groups. Three very different experiences.

And yet, as Neerava reflects in her new blog, they shared something important: the gift of time and space to slow down, connect, listen inwardly and simply be where we are.

🌲 So... what would you describe Polaris Adventure?

We could tell you about the hiking, paddling, overnight adventures, wilderness skills, campfires and all the ways Polaris challenges teens to step outside their comfort zones.

But we thought we’d ask the experts instead. 👀

“How would you describe Polaris Adventure?”

Their answers?

A little unpredictable.
A lot of adventure.
And apparently... having a pretty great time along the way. 😂

Polaris is designed for teens ready to take on a bigger adventure, build new skills, explore Gambier Island and Howe Sound, and discover what they’re capable of along the way. 🌊🌲

Sometimes the best way to describe camp isn’t with a brochure.

It’s with the kids who experienced it.

🌿 Learning is a journey. And knowledge is meant to be shared.

Chiax’tn (Wes) is one of several wonderful Sḵwx̱wú7mesh elders and Knowledge Keepers who share their ways of knowing at Walking with the Squamish, Camp Fircom’s Professional Development Retreat for K–12 educators.

Through stories, teachings and lived experience, these Knowledge Keepers help create a space where educators can listen, learn and reflect on how knowledge is carried forward and shared with the next generation.

Over two days on Chá7elkwnech (Gambier Island), participants will have opportunities to learn from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh elders, educators and community leaders through conversations, workshops and experiences exploring history, language, culture, ethnobotany, stories, and stewardship.

The retreat is hosted by longstanding partners Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation, Sea to Sky Outdoor School, the David Suzuki Foundation and Camp Fircom, who have been working together since 2015 to create opportunities for learning around conservation, Indigenization, and justice.

Come with questions.
Come ready to listen.
Come ready to learn.

And leave with knowledge, connections, and perspectives you can carry back into your classroom and community.

Meet Wes, Chiax’tn

For many years, Wes has been an important part of the Camp Fircom community, sharing his knowledge, stories, music and teachings with generations of campers.

In this video, Wes teaches us the true pronunciation of Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and shares his own name, Chiax’tn, along with its meaning.

These moments remind us that learning at Camp Fircom is about more than simply participating in an activity. It is about listening, asking questions, learning from Knowledge Keepers, and creating space for Indigenous culture, language and teachings to be shared with the next generation.

We are grateful to Wes for the many years he has spent sharing his knowledge and continue to help campers build deeper connections with culture, community and the land. 🌲

Want to help make experiences like these possible? 💚

Whether you’d like to donate, support Camp Fircom programs, or volunteer your time, there are many ways to get involved.
