CFUW stands in solidarity with the Tumbler Ridge community, and all with British Columbians and Canadians who are in mourning during this heartbreaking time.

CFUW stands in solidarity with the Tumbler Ridge community, with British Columbia, and with all Canadians who are in mourning following news of a tragic shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary school. We commend the resilience of the emergency service workers, teachers, staff and residents of Tumbler Ridge, and thank them for all their work.

CFUW is deeply invested in public education, and we are devastated that violence affected students at their place of learning. Every student in Canada deserves to feel safe and be free from harm in their pursuit of learning.

We encourage our members to stand in support of all those affected. Acts of violence of this scale leave long-lasting impacts on the communities they occur in. CFUW affirms the need for mental health care and the availability of mental health resources.

16 Days of Activism: Day 8 - Violence against women is a men's issue

Between 2011 and 2021, police reported 1,125 gender-related homicides of women and girls in Canada. Of these homicides, 93% were committed by a male intimate partner or family member of the victim. Nearly half of victims of intimate partner violence live with the accused at the time of the incident. In 2019, 80% of people who had experienced IPV (intimate partner violence) did not report it to the police. The statistics speak for themselves – men are the perpetrators of violence against women, and women are often too afraid to report it.

We need to change the conversation. We need to hold men accountable for their actions. Men need to hold men accountable for their actions. We need to end violence against women.

Are you in an abusive relationship? Are you perpetrating abusive behaviour? While domestic violence and abuse are sometimes hidden, if we know the signs of an abusive relationship, we may be able to recognize it better and seek or offer help.

There is for online abuse, and yet it is exploding 💥

During the of Activism, we’re calling it what it is: violence against women and girls.

From unwanted DMs and password pressure to trolling and deepfakes that sexualize women, online abuse starts small and escalates fast.

The impact is real: fear, emotional harm, lost opportunities, and shattered safety — online and offline.

Gender-based violence is one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. And it’s preventable.

The Action Agenda lays out what works: laws, investment & action.

We’re calling for one global commitment: zero tolerance—no excuses.

Let’s march forward and take NO STEPS BACK : https://beijing30.unwomen.org/

UNHCR has assisted hundreds of thousands of Afghans who’ve returned home - many under duress.

51% are women and 32% of households are headed by women.

Without our female national staff, we cannot serve them and have been forced to temporarily close our cash and support centres.

September 30 is a day of mourning.

For all non-Indigenous settlers, we hope you will learn, reflect, and take action, as we approach next week’s Truth and Reconciliation Day. We’ve compiled a list of resources to help you do so: https://ow.ly/vUk850X0VgB

Backlash against women’s rights is rising, and progress on is stalling.

World leaders gathered at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for a once-in-a-generation opportunity 30 years after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action; the world’s most visionary blueprint for women’s rights.

But this is not a commemoration.
It’s a test of global leadership.

We need bold, collective leadership to deliver the Action Agenda—our roadmap for action, grounded in data, driven by partnership, and centered on accountability.

This is how we march forward. One global commitment: NO STEPS BACK .

Pride Season is about more than celebration, it's about awareness, safety, and change.

As we honour 2SLGBTQI+ communities across Canada we also recognize the ongoing work of building a safer and more inclusive country for everyone. This is why Canada has taken action through two key initiatives:

📘 The Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan
This is Canada's first-ever government-wide plan to support 2SLGBTQI+ people. It focuses on building safety, breaking down barriers, and ensuring everyone is free to be their authentic selves at school, at work, and in their communities.

🛑 Canada’s Action Plan on Combatting Hate
Hate has no place in Canada. This plan takes steps to address rising hate, online and offline, while investing in community-led solutions to keep people safe and informed.

Being aware means staying involved and speaking up.
