Why is Saskatchewan choosing the most expensive electricity options?

The provincial government has announced a goal of 2,600 MW of nuclear power by 2050, including two large reactors in northwestern Saskatchewan and two SMRs near Estevan.

In the meantime, Saskatchewan plans to keep costly, polluting coal-fired power running. The coal extension plan alone is estimated to cost $26 billion through 2050 — more than twice the estimated cost of expanding renewables, even after adding battery storage.

Nuclear brings another layer of enormous financial risk. Georgia’s two 1,000 MW nuclear reactors (the same design Saskatchewan is studying) took 15 years to build and cost roughly $50 billion, more than double the original budget. When the reactors came online, power rates jumped by almost 24%. And Ontario’s first 300 MW SMR is now budgeted at a staggering $7.7 billion.

Nuclear power also brings long-term concerns about radioactive waste, cooling-water needs, accident liability, fuel supply chains, and decommissioning.

Saskatchewan should stop locking ratepayers into costly coal and nuclear projects and instead invest in wind and solar power, battery storage, electricity efficiency and conservation, and stronger interprovincial connections with Manitoba. These are climate-friendly solutions that are clean, less financially risky, and readily available now.

Yesterday, SES appeared before the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, alongside co-appellants Kiké Dueck, Sherry Olson, Matthew Wiens, and Citizens for Public Justice - CPJ, asking the Court to review a January decision that dismissed our challenge of Saskatchewan’s coal extension decision. We are seeking the opportunity for our judicial review application to proceed to a full hearing.

The three-judge panel reserved its decision, which will be released at a later date. More than 80 people observed the hearing in person or virtually, with the Court opening a second room for overflow. Thank you to everyone who came out or tuned in to show support.

We also acknowledge the coal workers who attended, and the two coal unions that made submissions as intervenors. We understand why workers want their voices heard. Their livelihoods and communities are directly affected by the provincial government's decisions, and they should not be left facing uncertainty because the province failed to plan adequately for the federally required 2030 coal phase-out.

SES brought this case forward because Saskatchewan residents deserve affordable electricity, clean air, protection from climate change, and a serious shift towards the renewable energy solutions already available to us.

Today, SES hosted a press conference to share the legal, environmental, health, and financial risks of extending coal. Tomorrow morning, we will appear before the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal alongside our co-appellants to ask that our joint legal challenge move forward.

The Government of Saskatchewan is actively defying federal law by trying to keep its coal-fired power plants running past the 2030 phase-out deadline. Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada doing this.

This decision could double your power bills by 2040, lock in decades of pollution, and threaten public health. A multi-billion dollar decision like this deserves full transparency and legal review.

Join us tomorrow to observe the hearing in support of a coal-free future:
📍 Court of King’s Bench, 520 Spadina Crescent E., Saskatoon
🕙 September 15 at 10:00 a.m. (Arrive early to get through security.)
